Title: We Go Together
Fandom: Leverage
Prompt: any, Grease!AU (for kryptic_pear at comment_fic)
Pairings/Characters: Nate/Sophie, Maggie. (Parker/Hardison and Tara/Sterling hinted at)
Warnings: ....it's a Grease AU. Um. No warnings. Very slight spoiler for the plot of Grease, I guess...
Summary: Transfer student Sophie meets Nate Ford during summer break, and is dismayed to find that he doesn't seem to want to know her once school starts again.
A/N: Oh, dammit, I think I made myself ship Tara/Sterling. *headdesk*

“Hey, Nate...” Sophie said when she saw him walking out of school that afternoon. He turned and looked at her.

“Yeah?”

Her heart sank at the lack of recognition. “I wondered if you wanted to do something this evening.”

He considered it. “Well, a bunch of us are going to the diner, you can come.”

Without waiting for an answer, he went to catch up with his friends, leaving Sophie to hurry along after him.

'A bunch of us' turned out to be Nate, his friends Eliot and Alec, and a guy named Jim who was introduced as part of the gang even though none of the other three seemed to like him much. The guys spent most of the evening joking around and telling each other wildly improbable stories, so Sophie sat with the other girls who'd come along - Maggie, who was nice to her and seemed pretty normal; Parker, who seemed a bit... unusual to Sophie, and Tara, who left the girls' table after a while to have a loud argument in the parking lot with Jim.

While they were shouting at each other, Parker switched tables to sit with Alec, and Sophie leant over and said to Maggie,

“So, do you know if Nate's dating anyone?”

Maggie blinked in surprise. “What... oh, you... um, that's not a good idea.”

“It's not?”

“Yeah, Nate and I were pretty steady last year, but we broke up. He can be kind of difficult sometimes...”

“Oh.”

“What's up?”

“I shouldn't say...”

“Go on, your secret's safe with me.”

Sophie took a sip of her milkshake. “This summer... before term started... I'd only just arrived in town, and I didn't know anyone... I met him down at the beach, and we hung out a lot. I thought we were close... but he doesn't seem to want to talk to me any more.”

Maggie nodded. “Oh, yeah. We broke up a couple months before summer break, and he got kind of... different, afterwards. Or that's what his friends said.” At the look of despair on Sophie's face, she added quickly, “Look, don't panic. He needs time to adjust... and now you're at our school, you've got lots of opportunities to get him to remember that you exist.”

“Maybe I shouldn't. Maybe that would be a mistake... I should just get over him.”

“Sophie,” Maggie said seriously, “that time you spent together over the summer... did it mean something to you?”

“Of course...”

“And it was special, right?”

“Yeah.”

“And you felt like you were meant to be together, right?”

“Yes...”

“Then no, you shouldn't just forget about it. It'll be fine, we'll help you...” She thought about that, and added, “Well, Tara and I will. Parker mostly does her own thing...”

“What's the story with her, anyway?”

Maggie sighed. “It's kind of a long story....”
