Personally I think Japanese and Mexican cultures both love the pathologies of life? Why? Alot of anime deals with intense emotions within a person, until they come pouring out, or are brought to the foreground by other characters (typically villains) who challenge the other characters (the heroes) with thier own flaws. That is total drama. Mexican culture, well, look at telenovellas, and how it seems like SO many people watch them. Nuff said.
The artist Murakami thinks that the twisted nature of some anime is a response to the impotence Japanese male psyches feel after having been subjugated by war and the atom bomb.
I suppose "for kids" means very young audiences. I believe it is there, only grossly exaggerated to the point of clown-like behavior. Issues about girls, masturbation, pooping. I have watched some of the stuff for the very young which is only played LATE at night, and it's rather um,, different.
