Concert: Tenacious D at the Uptown in Kansas City, MO

Jul 26, 2012 00:42

Tenacious D really shouldn't be that good.  At the core, they are a novelty act that has dissected the great rock and metal bands' discographies and built something that stands on it own as metal... vulgar, vulgar metal.

feckalyn and I arrived at the Uptown just a little before The D came on.  We purposefully skipped the opening band (for those interested, it was The Sights).   The place was PACKED.  We saw Andrew Bird at this venue several months ago and it was completely different.  It was hotter inside than it was outside... and you know that that's saying something this summer.  Sweaty bodies were rubbing up against each other. There was this one girl who was wearing a black t shirt with he mudflap girl on it.  The mudflap girl had a lighted outline that strobed... very cool.

Soon the band came out on stage and Jack Black took control of the crowd immediately.  He's the perfect front man.  His voice is as amazing live as it is on the albums.  The crowd plays along with the put on persona.  Why didn't I think of that?

They then proceeded to play 6 songs from the new album Rise of the Fenix, then a classic, then a couple from the movie, then the rest were from the first album.  It was the perfect blend.  There was some comedy and some covers mixed in there as well.  There was an encore and they finished the night with Fuck Her Gently... which of course is the perfect place to end.

Overall, this was a solid show.  The entire audience seemed "in" on the joke and weren't obnoxious at all.  The music was tight and loud.  I'd see them again in a heartbeat.
