Reading about the hype how the new Star Wars movie is breaking box office records in one day and no doubt continue to the record breaking over the weekend, I recall fondly my own memories about the original trilogy.

Oddly enough I did not see any of the original films in theaters. I was too young to sit through a 2 hour movie and understand what was going on in it.

But I do remember watching the films as they came out on videotape that my family would play on our Betamax. Years later I would learn that a "friend of a friend" who worked at a local movie cinema would bootleg the movies off the reel and copy them to videotape. I remember watching them out of order, so I got ROTJ and ANH confused (since there were 2 Death Stars in both of them). I became more familiar with Star Wars as I got older and was excited to see some of the Star Wars cast make an appearance on the Muppet Show. I instantly recognized the voice of Frank Oz as Yoda when I watched The Empire Strikes Back.

When ROTJ came out, I was in first grade and during some kind of marketing thing mixed in the PTA (I don't remember the details why) but as a reward my class got ROTJ toothbrushes. The toothbrushes had pictures of various characters on them. I traded mine which was Jabba the Hut for a R2-D2 toothbrush.

I vaguely remembering watching the made for TV movie about the Ewoks helping this girl and her family that gets stranded on their planet. I first thought the girl was Drew Barrymore from ET but wasn't.

I don't remember Boba Fett being popular, I just remember Greedo and he was the character that I remembered better and he was talked more than Boba Fett.

My favorite non-human characters has been Chewbacca, R2-D2 and Yoda.
