Happy new year to all!
After three weeks of being in the midst of Manila's excessive merrymaking, I am finally back in Melbourne (the word 'finally' just came out of impulse, and deleting it would be a dishonest move). It has been a mellow couple of weeks down under; I've just been going out for quiet coffees, running, reading, cooking for myself. In the pursuit of stabilising my lifestyle post-postgrad, I think I'm pretty much on my way. Although I still need to get chocolate out of my life.
My days in town are numbered. My flat in the city is expiring soon and I'm moving to Fitzroy. It's not a completely drastic move, as I did from Bundoora to the city, which was around 16 km. From my flat to Fitzroy, it's about 250 (?) meters away. My city flat rests on the edge of the CBD, where Lonsdale meets with Nicholson St Fitzroy.
But alas, I have to trade in the grandeur of the Parliament building and the Princess Theatre to the quirkiness of the local fashion shops, cafes, bookshops in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. I absolutely cannot wait! I had a look at my future home earlier this week and instantly fell in love with it. It's a lovely Victorian terrace house (a quick Google search revealed that it's one of the oldest Victorian-era terrace houses in Melbourne) with a Mongolian ger or tent in the backyard. Apart from the fact that it's right in the middle of my favourite street in the country (High St Northcote a close second), the ger pretty much was the selling point. The owner has a fantastic eye for design, so the house is a hybrid of old and new design with a bit of Mongolian art here and there. What a complete relief from my awfully small and generic student flat.
I am so excited to move! I am not really a fan of Fitzroy in general, but Gertrude is a gem and quite an underrated street. Nevermind that it intersects with the dodgy Brunswick street.
