Playing Catch Up

Ok it's been so long since I posted I really feel like I need to get into the habit of a little often than a lot infrequently. We'll see if that happens, but to be honest I've just had so much to get on with that it's been impossible to sit down and type for any significant period of time. So in short this is what I've been up to since I came back from Ethiopia:

  • Moving back in. To my parents' house. Obviously this isn't the best of situations, but its all I can do at the moment. Having made sure to spend all my salary in Ethiopia to help 'develop' the country I do not have the means to take up a flat by myself. Next job, this will be my main aim. So I've moved 8 years worth of 'stored' stuff from my room and set up an office, installed wifi at the parents', changed their ISP to save them cash, fought French social security (and am winning unlike the calvary of UK national insurance, applied for jobs (always and ever ongoing) and seen three old school friends.
  • Gone to meet up with old Chemical Engineering friends in Devon. I flew a glider, did loop-the-loops and made nearby campers s*** themselves as we flew over them at low altitude and fast enough that the air was screeching around us. I went surfing at Perranporth (first time ever in Cornwall) and discovered I wasn't that bad (though I completely sucked at body-boarding). I got pretty hammered and had a great time catching up with everybody.
  • Went up to Orrell to see my oldest and best friend, his wife who was sick, my Godson who is the smartest kid I know, and his sister. It was good to be back with the family again. Obviously it wasn't the happiest of trips since Rashida was full to the brim with pain and spasms, but she's coping masterfully. I saw her fight off the desire for morphine by sheer will power alone. I was so proud of her! Peter and I got to catch up nicely, Simon was a darling (cooking me dinner and the like, aged 6) and Sophia, after she got used to me again was all coy and cuddly. I got to play on the Wii for the first time, fun but I don't think it would hold my interest long-term, played RoboRally (which I suck at and hate) and Tikal (which I kick arse at and love).
Things haven't slowed down at all, and I've got until Tuesday to wrap everything up as I will then be off to Iceland. Yes I know I'm poor but then again I'm not paying. I had a plan to see my friends from Glasgow to Milan, but then my parents dumped the possibility to go to Iceland right in the middle. Result: my social life is in complete disarray, but I'm going to ICELAND! Hurrah!

Anyway when I get back from that I'll soon be off to a wedding in Corsica (must remember to buy a present), shortly followed by Wacken Metal Festival \m/ and then an interview for the International Committee of the Red Cross (Woohoo!)... by that time we'll be well into August, meaning I'll be very close to my desired deadline for departure on my next job (wherever that may be) and I still won't have seen many of my friends... Damn living all over the place it's a real pain sometimes!

I'll put a link to photos from Ethiopia soon. Watch this space.
