From the Carpark to the Market

Nov 29, 2003 19:52

As Mouse dragged May through the carpark she tried to look for clues on Salene's disappearance. Whoever it was that took her away had to climb stairs down to the main way. Were they really that busy when she had been kidnapped to not notice this? Mouse felt really bad. Would Salene be mad that no one had stopped the attacker? Would she feel ( Read more... )

May was glad that she had decided to wear her jacket that morning to keep warm, for she never would have had the chance to grab it with the rush Mouse was in. The abductors wouldn't have taken Salene towards the Market, the streets would have been too busy. So they would have gone around through the back alleys. But it was useless going there because no-one would have seen anything--atleast no-one would admit to it without being payed more than May had on her at present. "I suppose we can see if there are any new rumours floating around the Market. Though I figure they'll be full of the face off at the Mall between Moz and Amber. The problem is Mouse, that someone somewhere knows exactly what's going on, it's just trying to make contact with that person and seeing what they're asking price for the information is."
They walked along the streets that were indeed full of kids. Salene never had the chance to start that Entertainment idea we were working on, she thought, Look at these kids. Just wandering and spreading rumours. They need ( ... )

Mouse had hoped that May would want to go the back way so they could search better than in the middle of market, but May obviously had other plans. She followed her into Market listening to her talk. Did May think she was dumb? She knew how to make contacts and that things cost a price. She and Sammy had gotten the Mall the dishwasher afterall and they had made deals to get the computers and software they needed to play the game. But whatever...

She jumped at the stall owners words. How did he know that May had been a Blue? Or was May still playing the game somehow??? And he even recognised that she had been a Red. Mouse grabbed May's arm. "May. Let's get out of here. You know Salene doesn't like that!" What fight was he talking about?

May knocked a small trinket off the stand. "Sorry about that. Haven't been feeling well recently." She coughed and bent to pick it up. "Quiet, Mouse." She whispered. "This guy has info we need." She placed the useless trifle on the table again. "Have they moved the location again? I've been ill so I haven't been able to keep up."
"Of course. Can't have the law finding it. Everyone knows how the Mallrats feel about the Game. And the Mallrats are in charge these days. Of course Lex might be in if it meant a profit." He laughed. "You were one of the best of the Zappers when the Technos still controlled the Game. Have you still got the T-gun?"
He's got info on the weapons and location? May thought. This is better than I'd hoped! She tried to ignore how fidgety Mouse was getting.

Mouse made a face at May. Geez, she was bossy! Come on! How could she expect this guy to tell them anything when they were together. A Red and A Blue together? That was like...suspicious, wasn't it??? And she wasn't a Red anymore anyhow!

She took a step back away from May and the stall. The Owner was telling her something and she was just close enough to over hear. Something about a warehouse somewhere that held maps?? Maps to where? Maybe this Zapper and StingRay thing was a LOT bigger than they had originally thought. Maybe they were the ones who had taken Salene. Mouse frowned. There were too many people that could have taken Salene. This wasn't getting any easier.

Hmmm.... A warehouse for the maps on the Game places and T-guns for your enemies. And a stall owner willing to shout out in the open to attract attention from possible game players. This had grown over the last few days bigger than she had anticipated. When she had found Ellie it was only a whispered rumour. Could the Zappers and the Stingrays have taken Salene for part of the Game as the Technos had once used Jay? It no longer seemed such a preposterous thought after all. And it would explain the lack of a ransom note.

"You know." The man leaned closer. "If you'd like to upgrade, I know some people that can up the power on the T-Gun." He layed his finger aside his nose and winked.

May tilted her head to one side, appearing indifferent. "More power doesn't improve a bad aim. And if you've got a good one the basic T-gun's all you need." UP the power? It already was capable of kill! She noted Mouse starting to slip away. "Looks like my companion's more interested in lunch than your wares." She said lightly trying to cover the little ( ... )

Mouse saw the flash of zappers as the Owner brought them out for a quick moment. "Whoa...!" She couldn't help but say. If Salene knew about these!

The Owner just smiled at her outburst. That obviously had gotten her attention. Now what could he get out of them for a set? They didn't look like they were carrying much. "So...?" He asked. "What'll it be? Whatcha got?"

Mouse got closer to the stall. This wasn't turning out too well. What would May do? And if they got the zappers would she return to playing the game - for real? Mouse didn't understand this. People chasing each other was wrong. People zapping each other was wrong. Especially when you could kill someone with these! She didn't want it to return to the way it had been when the city was chasing Jay.

But maybe they should get the zappers. Take them to Lex. Tell them about the shop owner. Would that be a good idea?

"May..." Mouse began.

May crossed her arms across her chest and leaned back on one leg arching an eyebrow at the man. "I never said I was going to buy." She replied in an almost bored way. "Souped up T-guns are for those who can't shoot straight in the first place. And you must be pretty desperate to get rid of those if you'll risk showing them in an open Marketplace. Makes me wonder if anything's wrong with them. And after all, you're not the only one selling them. If I need one, I'm sure I can get one on the way to The Game." May was certain she would have looked more in control without the violent sneeze that rocked her back on her heels a moment later. Darn! She hadn't sneezed or coughed this entire time, why now??

May was still playing The Game!?! Mouse couldn't believe this! She had just said that she could get another one on the way to the Game. Now Mouse was worried. Was May involved in Salene's disappearance? Was she tricking them like she had done before over the Game?? Mouse didn't know what to do ( ... )

"And if I ever need a new one I'm sure you'll be one of the people I'll come to." May replied slipping her hand into the pocket of her jacket. "But as of right now I only needed to find out where it is so I can take the prize like I did in the Virtual Game." She smiled dangerously and leaned forward on the table. "Do you doubt me?"

He held up his hands and backed off with a chuckle. "If you refer other Gamers to me I'm sure I can make it up to you." He leaned closer to her after glancing around surreptitiously. "But becareful of some of these new characters in the city. They seem to have taken an interest in the Game, but they don't take part in it."

"Yeah, I've heard something of the likes. Someone new in the City." May frowned, this guy was talking too much now. Something was up. No-one shared information this freely.

Mouse sighed. This was getting them no where. And it didn't help that it seemed May was once again involved with the Game - Virtual or Not. Who cared if there were people not getting involved! Mouse didn't intend to. Most of the Mallrats didn't intend to!! So what was the big deal???

The Owner sighed himself as he watched Mouse. "Just a little fidgety. Better get out of here." He told May. "A Zapper and a StingRay together doesn't look too good, ya know. Get to the Warehouse, but dump her first somewhere."

Mouse glared at the Owner. DUMP HER SOMEWHERE??!!?? She didn't think so. If that's the way May was going to be...

Mouse walked away from the stall. May could finish her talk however she wanted. Mouse had an idea where Salene might be if she didn't return to the Mall....

May shrugged at the stallowner and walked after Mouse. She wasn't sure what the little girl was thinking. And her silence indicated that she wasn't interested in sharing what she was thinking.

May turned the information she had just received over and over again in her head. A Warehouse with maps in the deserted part of town. And the informants were none too careful who they passed out their info to as long as they recognized you from the Virtual Game.

This new group of people watching the Game but not taking part of it intrigued her. Of course it had already been proven that the Game made a good spectator sport. Though it'd be harder to follow in Reality, and who knows when one of the Game Players might decide to make you a part of the action.

"Uhm...Mouse." She said after a few minutes looking around, this certainly wasn't the way to the Warehouses. "Where are you taking us by the way?"
