Well, you already know this...but I've been a runner for about ten years and I did that whole marathon thing!

I've never tried triathlons before, mainly because I'd need some serious swimming workouts! Good luck!

Hey Susan! Yes, that's awesome! I may be asking you for advice. Thank you. I just ordered a really good book on the "Total Immersion" swimming method, to increase swimming efficiency.

Hi! Sorry, it's finals time out here, so I've been busy studying for my last finals as an undergrad (until nursing school, of course!). I'm definitely interested in at least the syllabi from pathophysiology and pharmacology so I can see what to expect in a few months! I've never been one to use voice recorders, so I'll probably hold off on that until I see how classes are going. My email is spass@umd.edu

Thanks again! Back to studying...

I read/saw what you did in response to Mippy's suicidal post and wanted to say it makes me extremely proud/happy to know there are people who care about others that they dont even know.

Not alot of people would have taken the effort to try and help like you did and you probably saved a life.

Thanks :)

Thank you so much for your kind words! I hate it when people are passive when someone is hurting.

Let's hope she makes smarter decisions about her health next time.

It's so cool you are a horse trainer! How did you get into this? Are you Amish? I see it's one of your interests.

Just wanted to say hello.

I'm basically an anti-athlete, but I have been going to campus gym for the last 15 months, and recently have been up to 10 or more miles/day on a stationary recumbent bike. So, trying to battle the couch potato thing about 20 years later than I should have.

Good luck with the PA program applications. I have a health care background that's not obvious from my userprofile or current career (am keeping a low profile in terms of identifying details on LJ because of my job).

Hi, Professor! :) Thank you for stopping by. Wow, 10 miles/day is fantastic. I actually injured my feet playing tennis last week, so I haven't been able to train ( ... )

I added you to my friends list. My contacts may become few and far between for awhile, as I really have a lot of work to do!

Cell and developmental biologist.

Cool that you've met Richard Dawkins.

He and his readers are very thoughtful and interesting. Don't agree with all he says, but I love the frank, thoughtful discussions.

I was reading fake_lj_deaths and I came across the post about the girl who posted suicidally on _scientists_ and that you called the police who got her help.
This may get a little tl;dr but I thought I'd share.
I told someone that I barely knew that I was planning on taking my life (which I was) and the date, time etc. I'm not sure why I did it, I was fully serious on doing it but I think I was having second thoughts. At the time I figured he was the least likely to do anything about it. Anyway he called the police and long story short, I was put in a competent hospital and I'm doing much better now.
It's really, really nice that there are still people in this world who care about the wellbeing of others instead of being so quick to dismiss things.
Thank you for looking out for this girl, even though you didn't know her.
I've almost scrapped this comment a couple of times because it's extremely cheesy :-P But I think I'll send it anyway. Have an awesome day.

Awww....thank you SO much!

Actually, the girl posted later about her whole suicide experience, plus getting a call from the London police, who took her to the emergency room. She said she had seriously been thinking of throwing herself under a train if her original drug overdose idea hadn't worked. It was very real, and I was delighted I caught her in time. :)

I really appreciate your note. I'm so happy YOU are alive and well. If you'd ever like to talk, let me know. I hope your life is happy and rewarding, as it should be. :p

Also, did you see my post

Books that changed my life? They really helped cheer me up in college, when I was feeling really down.

I have a list of things to check out next time I hit the library, thank you :-)
This is a really weird and out of place question, I suppose, but I saw that you recommended exercise.
I have a heart condition (long QT syndrome) that, at the moment, is not under control by medication. I was diagnosed with this a long time ago and I was forced to drop sports and aerobics. (I'm 18 right now)
I saw that you're studying medicine.. Can you recommend any that don't involve vigorous things, but still have the general benefits of being involved in something? I hope I'm making sense.
By the way, thank you for your offer to talk :-) I appreciate it and may take you up on that sometime.

Hey--I caught your Stoicism post on the philosophy community. I have a webcomic (The Man Who Hates Fun) about a young Stoic and his pals--been working on it very slowly since 2004 and currently not updating due to multiple day jobs, but I'll bring it back as soon as things settle down. It's got some very light commentary on Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and others. Check it out at http://mwhf.comicgen.com if you're interested--I think it's funny (obviously) and it's somewhat relevant to trying to be a Stoic in one's disastrously impoverished youth.
