mrs_five, an internal medicine doctor who is doing her fellowship in Honolulu, just wrote about her experience searching for men at a Japanese host club there.

Club Stinger -

Opening Soon, a Japanese style host club located inside the lobby of the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel, 444 Niu Street, Honolulu, HI. Nice guys to talk with and you can either sit at the bar or sit at the table with a nice Japanese man to keep you company. The benefit for sitting at the table allows you to sing Karaoke. For more information call.

Here's a photo of the menu of guys she could select:

Here's what a host club is. I sometimes joke that I should have tried to work in one when I was in Taipei:Female customers pay for male company. Some host clubs also specialize in female-to-male transsexual hosts.[5] Host clubs are typically found in more populated areas of Japan, and are famed for being numerous in Tokyo districts such as Kabukichō, and Osaka's Umeda and Namba. Customers are typically wives of rich men or women working as hostesses in hostess clubs.[6]

The number of host clubs in Tokyo in 1996 was estimated to be 200, and a night of non-sexual entertainment could cost $500 to $600. A women's studies professor explained the phenomenon by Japanese men's lack of true listening to the problems of women, and by women's desire to take care of a man and be loved back.

Male hosts pour drinks and will often flirt with their clients, more so than their female counterparts. The conversations are generally light-hearted; hosts may have a variety of entertainment skills, be it simple magic tricks or loads of charisma with which to tell a story. Some host clubs have a dedicated stage for a performance, usually a dance, comedy sketch etc.

Hosts are often an age between 18 and their mid-20s. They will take a 'stage name' usually taken from a favourite manga, film, or historical figure, and will often describe their character.

You "pay" for a date with a guy whom you've chosen from the "boy menu" and he will come and pour your drinks and flirt with you. And if all goes well and you build a "relationship" or pay him money, you will have high chances of having sex with him, if he likes you back. Ngeh. It's apparently not prostitution, but I must be reading it wrong because for me, the line seems very blurred at this point in my understanding.
