One of the readings we did for class this week was A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor. The story is not quite what I expected based on the title, or even the early stages of the story. It turns out to be quite dark with a sort of gruesome ending.
One of the major themes of the story is finding the goodness in people. It is something that the grandmother is fixated on throughout the story. The grandmother loves to reminisce about the past and talk about how much more values people had back then, and how you just don’t find that enough in today’s society. According to her people today are too loose on the morals and it is nearly impossible to find a truly good person. She really becomes fired up when she meets an older man close to her age and is able to talk about how much better things were back when they were growing up.
The grandmothers honest mouth and harsh judgments end up becoming a problem for the family after her stubborn ways lead them on a wild goose chase to find an old house with a secret panel. Even after running in the misfit, who is a dangerous criminal on the loose; she continues to push her views on him. Convinced he is a good man deep down she continues talking to him and expressing what she believes even though he appears to disagree. The grandmother’s beliefs may have not had an effect on his decision to kill the family, but her harsh tongue sure didn’t help and his actions proved her wrong in the end.
