Chapter 1

Rating: PG-13
Words: 1400

Summary: Reid Oliver, a CIA agent is in a great danger. But what had led to this desperate situation?

Outside the cell like room where Reid was held prisoner, sounds of violent acts were filling the hallway. Some of this prison’s guards could barely stop themselves to puke. Lamentations and screams resounded through the walls.

“I’m gonna make you break like crumbs scratched by my boots.” Reid’s old persecutors kept yelling while hitting his chest with his feet.

Curled up on the ground Reid had no other choice but to to roll with the punches.

“I never will tell you anything.” Reid tried to articulate as a huge foot was about to hit his swollen face.

Several times the old man punched his enemy until Reid was completely knocked out.

“Put him in chains.” He commanded two young men.

In his agony, before what was left of his eyes closed, Reid saw one of the two men faces. And it seemed familiar to him…

“I want his arms to hurt him so much that he’ll beg for mercy.”
“Yes sir.”
“I don’t know what he knows and how long he’s been spying on us and trying to ruin our divine quest. But what I’m sure of is that no traitor ever failed to give me all the information I need. And he better give it to me soon. I’m not a man of patience…”

They chained Reid up to the roof so his arms would be as high as possible. And it would hurt as if hell was on earth.

Noah was packing and cleaning his office. He was surprised that his best student had been missing classes for two days already. He hoped he was not sick.

“Professor Mayer?”

Talk about the devil…

Noah turned around and seemed happily surprised to see Reid.

“Morning mister Oliver.”
“Morning. Sorry I couldn't be there for both of your classes today.”

I had a target to follow…

“And yesterday…”
“Yes. And yesterday.”

Noah looked at Reid sad eyes.

He probably had personal problems.

“Apologies accepted. You’re my best student, so it’s ok.”
“Thanks.”

Noah looked through piles of photocopies.

“Here’s today’s lessons.”

He wrote down something on a blank page and gave it to Reid.

“Read this and chapter 14 and 16 of your book on the European economic crisis. Then answer these questions. Have it done by Thursday.”
“Ok. Will do.”
“Great.”

Noah slightly smiled. Then started to feel ill-at-ease. His student was looking right through the eyes. Never breaking eye contact with him. Each time Reid was doing so, he felt numb. Like jelly on a plate.

Noah calm down. It’s only a student talking to you.

He sighed.

Why can’t I stop thinking about him…?

“Is that all you wanted to tell me?” Noah finally managed to ask.

He sounded a bit disappointed. Reid widely smiled. Being completely aware about his effect on his professor. This game was started to get funny. Reid had been following Noah and two of his friends for several weeks. And for what he knew, he was really appreciating this hide and seek game. He didn’t forget he had a mission to accomplish though.

Agent Oliver never failed a mission, but for a reason he could still not give a reasonable explanation to; Reid felt it was something different. Watching Noah waking up at 6.30am every day. Drinking his coffee. Getting prepared. Being in his class and listening to his full of passion lessons about art. Learning from some of his analysis of people’s way of living; though he knew already so much about all of this.

Reid was a CIA agent. He had been trained. Taught about everything that could have been taught. Learnt multiple things during all his previous missions. Bu listening to Noah’s contagious enthusiasm was pure bliss. He knew he shouldn't enjoy being around Noah. But he unfortunately did.

“Is that all?” Noah asked again.

Reid realized he had just lost himself into Noah’s ocean eyes. He shook his head and came to his senses.

“Ahem. Sorry sir. Hum No.”
“No to what?”
“No I wanted to talk to you about something else.”

Noah looked surprised.

“I wanted to apply for being your class assistant.”
“Really?”
“Yes. As you know it’s my third year and as I want to be teaching too one day. I think as you being my mentor and tutoring me, I could end up being a very good professor myself in few years.”

Noah smiled. He was surprised. He knew Reid was really interesting into his class. Seeing how much he was active. Asking lots of questions. Never missing one. Apart from that day. His grades were excellent. The best he had ever been given to college student. He was just afraid that being around him that much might transform his crush over his student into something more… Real. It was a very delicate situation which could lead to a very inappropriate one. He only had been teaching for five years now. He couldn't see his career being blown up so early. He wasn't even thirty!

Reid saw the inside battle in Noah’s eyes. He could not let go of his chances to get closer to Noah.

I have to get closer to him. It’s… for the best interest of the mission. Don’t forget your mission Reid.

As Reid thought this word. He could feel his phone vibrating. He took it off of his phone and read:

“911- McClurkin & Co- 381542N//0893005W-TIGER.IS.IN.CAGE.”

Oh damn. He’s out of jail. I have to see where he goes.

“EAGLE. IS.OUT.” Reid answered.

Ok. Sorry Mister Mayer. I have a tiger to investigate on.

Reid rushed out.

“Sorry mister Mayer. I have to go. I have a family emergency.”

Noah looked annoyed.

Did I offend him for not accepting his request right away…? Damn!

“Reid. Wait!” Noah shouted in the hallway.

Almost every student froze. Noah always tried to demonstrate personal restraint in public places. He smiled and then cleared his throat.

“Mister Oliver, come in my office tomorrow at noon. We’ll discuss about your request and your assignment.”

Reid smiled with his most charming one.

“See you tomorrow sir. Thank you.”
"Noah. You are making a huge mistake." Noah thought. "Why does he make you act like a fool…?"

Reid watched Noah slowly walking back his way to the amphitheater.

II knew he could not resist me.

Few minutes later, a black break with a blonde driver was picking up Reid.

“Agent Snyder, did the target move?”
“No he’s still at McClurkin & Co.”
“What’s he doing here?”
“As you know. Right after he went out of jail he rented one of the rooms upstairs.”
“So did he call Bird yet?”
“Yes. Thanks to the information you gathered, we know he had not contacted Noah yet. Neither did he do with his oldest son.”

Reid sighed. He didn’t know if he had to feel relieved or annoyed that for now they had no evidences that could prove that Noah was linked to Bird. He might be innocent. But Reid knew people’s perfectly respectable lifestyle could hide evil.

“What are the commands?” He finally asked.

The blonde looked at him suspiciously.

“Are you into one of our target?” He inquired.

Reid ignored it. Annoyed by the perspicacity of his partner.

“What are the commands? He repeated.
“Don’t let yourself getting emotional Reid… You can’t.”
“I know…”
“We are to follow Mayer’s dad and wait until he goes to meet our target. Then follow him.”
“When are they supposed to meet?”
“According to the phone taping, they are to meet at 8 pm at the old docks.”

Agent Snyder laughed. Trying to reduce the tensions.

“Do we always have to be that formal Reid?”
“Yeah bro. You know me. When I work, I’m always so professional.” Reid tried to ironize.
“Yeah I know.”

The two young men smiled at each other.

“Feels weird to be doing a mission with my baby brother, you know.”
“I know…”
“Here.”

Agent Snyder handed his younger half-brother a sandwich.

“I know you always forget to grab something to eat.”
“Thanks Luke.”
“I’ll always have your back."
