I never win anything luck-based. Never. In fact, I usually don't even try because what's the point?
But at Saturday's T-Dance, they were doing a 50-50 draw and after much hemming and hawing, I finally decided to pitch in. I handed over my five bucks, the guy measured out tickets along my in-seam (I made sure to hike my pants up to make sure he got every last inch) and I stashed the tickets away, knowing with absolute certainty that I wouldn't win.
An hour or so later they turned the music down to announce the winner. I pulled my tickets out on the off chance that a miracle could happen, but knowing full well that it wouldn't. They started calling out the number, digit by digit. Match. Match. Match. Match. Match. Match... oh crap, I missed it by ONE! Oh wait a minute, there's another ticket folded over here and OH MY GOD I WON!!! Huh? I read the numbers over again. I showed them to a friend. Are those the right numbers? "Get up there!" he told me.
So I threw my hand up so they could see me coming (I didn't want them to give up waiting and call a new number) and I ran up on stage, all giddy with excitement. I got up there with the DJ and the announcer, suddenly getting nervous that maybe I'd heard the numbers wrong and I'd have to walk off the stage in shame. But when they finally confirmed it all, it was handshakes all around and $210 in my pocket. Woohoo! I was so excited!
So it seems that my losing streak is over, and that my long legs are good for something after all. If I'd been an inch shorter -- or if I hadn't worn my big work boots that night -- I wouldn't have gotten that last ticket measured out. Yay for long in-seams and guys who measure tickets right up to the grundle. Maybe I should buy a 6/49 ticket... they sell those by the in-seam, right? :P
In fact, it was a great weekend all around. I had an awesome paddling practice, I went out wall climbing with three other guys (who are hopefully now hooked, will take the belaying course, and will eagerly climb with me again), went for a hike on Seymour, and hung out with some cool people. I ate some really good food too, which is always important, including two new restaurants I'd never been to before, and I finally got that "itch" scratched so I was happy.
Yup, great weekend. Had an awesome time.
