Why I'm not moving to DW (right now)

Apr 05, 2017 14:44

I suppose my main problem is that DW is not a good service.  I have serious trouble posting things there and it limits my ability to follow other communities.  I really can't figure it out, because it's a service that was built for fandom.  So why is it so difficult to post my fanworks on it ( Read more... )

I've had a DW account for ages and moved my LJ over last year as a back up, and now I try to crosspost, but I really don't feel at home there - and it's more expensive than LJ for me, and a free DW does limit you a little.

I've been thinking of moving my three active comms over, but keeping a foot on LJ with them and allowing comments on both sites - but not right now, and only if I can work it out so I don't end up with more work. To be honest, I'm not too worried right now. Most of this is more a 'just in case' thing.

I also wish there was a platform that could draw all fans together. Tumblr and me just don't work well at the moment, and Twitter is also a place I don't really hang out anymore.

Yeah, I'm using it for free. I pay nothing and still complain :-)

I'm still here. I've been cross-posting from Dreamwidth since 2009. The only thing I'm going to do differently is close commenting here so that I don't have worry about importing comments.

Other vidders use the site. I don't know what is causing you difficulty. You are not alone in hating YouTube.

I think it is a good idea to backup your content somewhere. If LJ goes down permanently, I wouldn't count on there being any warning.

It's not impossible to use DW, it's just harder for me than LJ. For example, LJ accepts youtube links, DW wants embed code. When I mark a cut in DW, there is no visual indication when I select a clip or empty lines. Adding something after I mark a cut can be very frustrating. In general, changing line spacing is a very frustrating experience for me on DW.

My blog is archived on my computer. I don't know if that's good enough to import elsewhere, but it's not that important for me.

Okay. I think most vidders there use Vimeo rather than YouTube because of the takedown issues at the latter.

I use simple html rather than the text editor at DW (and LJ and AO3 and Tumblr). I struggled mightily with the text editor. I never did master it. Eventually I found a kid's html learning site and taught myself to use it instead.

It's amazing what we put up with.

Lots of vidders use Vimeo, but the trouble with that is that it's as not very publicly accessible. If I want my vid to get around as much as possible, I have to post it on YouTube, despite the reality and danger that they'll take it down or block it.

I don't have much time for fandom ATM, but I don't know if I want to move over to Dreamwidth. Since I already had an account, I imported my stuff there, but I loved LJ for the community feeling and Dreamwidth doesn't have that. And maybe it will one day, but right now it doesn't seem like it.

Not fun :(

Why do you think DW doesn't have that community feeling? Technically it has the exact same features as LJ

I don't know. Part of it is that the people aren't there yet, or they're still moving over, or they're staying at LJ...

Also, I can't find the Friends feed. Which was the main way I kept track on other people and really everything except for some fests like BB or RBB. EDIT: okay, there is some sort of "Read" option, but that can't be right, because it only shows one entry (and also, they say that feed only goes back two weeks)? ...Actually it looks like that is right, except I need to "Subscribe" to people's journals. Instead of a simple Friend option, there is a difference between granting/having access and subscribing... I don't think LJ had this differentiating, except for communities; and, okay, it probably has some advantages but right now I don't have the time to really go and learn all DW's differences ( ... )

Hm... ok, good point. Not sure what can be done about that at the moment, though, besides tracking two sites.

There was a lot of talk about Imzy a while ago, and I know some people are still using it, but I found it hard to navigate.

I like DW -- to me, it's a lot like LJ. (But I use the html editor, and do most of my posting from Semagic anyway, which was something I started when LJ kept changing its posting interface a few years back.)

I tried Imzy a bit... it's much better than Facebook, but I don't use Facebook either. If I would, I might push Imzy more. I don't know, there's something about it that doesn't give me the LJ feeling.
