Ugh!!!

I'm very, very confused. Last night I went to my parents house with Thomas. I had a bad feeling about the night; I don't know why. I love my parents, but the night had an ominous aura about it. So after dinner, (which was amazing btw), my parents ended up talking to us for about two hours about businesses and the hot dog stand. My dad remained ( Read more... )

You and I seem to be in about the same position right now. I'm in a job that has nothing to do with any of my talents because I need to pay the bills. I haven't been able to find anything that would utilize my degree or anything I've ever studied or enjoyed. I would desperately love to start my own business, because I also hate working for other people. The longer I'm employed, the more I know this. Something creative, something no one else can offer but me. Something rewarding. That's the key I'm missing right now. What I'm doing now is anything but rewarding ( ... )

Yeah that's pretty much how I feel. Right now Thomas is making enough for us to live on, and a little bit of my paycheck goes toward health insurance. I'm considering really going out there and finding what I want to do, even if it's not going to pay much, if anything while we're in this place where we're OK with money and don't have kids. Maybe the idea is to find a job or internship in the field I want to start my business in, and get some really down and dirty experience.

I signed up for the Golden Thread--thanks!

Hmph. I so understand where you're coming from here. It's hard when you have skills and schooling, but can't quite come up with what you could DO with those skills. I needed someone to stand back and say 'Hm. Looks like you'll be good at this!' Honestly, I had NO idea. Best of luck with your decisions.

Yeah, I thought that's what my univeristy career counselors were supposed to do... but they didn't. They only asked me what I wanted to do, then told me to go do it. Except I didn't know what I wanted to do. Thanks, I could have figured that part out for myself.

This was my concern when you told me you wanted to run a hot dog stand. It seemed far outside your interests - aside from the fact that it could be profitable. I agree its hard to come up with something. (If only there weren't so many music/book stores out there - we three could do that!) I'm worried that you would put all this time/effort/money into the hot dog cart and end up hating it like teaching. The copywriting might be a better fit. Maybe make a list of everything you love and try to combine them in a unique way? I'm not too good at this :)

I think I just have to figure out what I want to do. The hot dog stand is more just an investment idea or an idea to make money. I could still do it part-time or on weekends like I planned. But, it's not really a career choice, and I need to figure that out...

Don't let what your parents say discourage you. No matter what degree someone has, evberyone has to start somewhere. It's not like you're resigning yourself to sell hot dogs for the rest of your life. You're the type of person that likes to see the result of their work and I think your hot dog idea would give that to you. Also, for some reason, I've always thought you should work with food, lol. You just love it so much! It's like Julia Child; she LOVED to eat, so she became a chef. Okay, doesn't apply to you 100%, just always thought you would enjoy running a restuarant or something. I like your copywriting idea and you have a few connections from your previous jobs, but I don't know much about that world, so can't really give you any advice. I think you are a really creative person though, I never would have thought of opening a hot dog stand! I know you didn't invent the idea, but to even think 'hey, i could do that" takes a creative, open minded person. Anyway, I agree with Thomas. You're parents obviously have an idea about how ( ... )

I have a lot of spelling mistakes. Please ignore and don't let it reflect badly on what I say!

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your support. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. I definitely want to do something of my own. Hot dogs or copywriting or whatever.
