Here in no particular order are thoughts that have been skittering around inside my mind today.

POD, or Print on Demand publishing, is green.

In traditional publishing, if a book fails to sell through and 8000 or 20,000 copies are returned to the publisher, they're shredded.

With POD, the books were never printed in the first place, so
