Chuckle. I've lived in apartments or rented homes most of my life so this seems perfectly believable to me. Appalling of course, too.

Back in Newark, I went through 2-3 weeks without either air conditioner working in my apartment during one of our worst heatwaves. (I was actually GLAD to get to work each day.) Every night, I hoped I would get home and find one of the two units fixed at minimum. Every morning, I called up when the office opened and reminded them that I had no air conditioning at all.

Just as the heatwave was spiraling down, they fixed one of the two units. The repairman commented that I would probably be glad to have to living room/dining area cool. I said my bedroom was out too.
He couldn't believe it--said that people without any air conditioning came first. Well, they don't come out and fix what the office doesn't tell them to fix. The woman in that office insisted I never told her both units were out when, of course, that had been my mantra.

And so on. As I said, you believe anything after you've lived in rental property for decades. They all lie, and most of them are extremely good at it. Even when you know better, or even when -I- know better, I just can't make myself say "You're lying. Again." And I freak at the mere thought of withholding rent. Which in this case, I just paid a few days ago, so I couldn't withhold in until they fixed the washing machine even if I were that brave.
