This is one of those things I'll probably regret posting, but... well, I have this OC fic (just a collection of scenes strung together, plus lots of contextual information), and you don't have to read it, but I'm going to post it anyway :) If anything, it will let you know what's been going on fanfictionally in my head since I first started watching Robin Hood all the way back in 2006 (the narrative has been forming since the very beginning - well, episode 1x02 or 1x03ish). You might notice that there isn't much Much content, but the reason I'm just posting it here to start off (and not in TAR or DeNile) is that I feel like you guys are my special family :)
Title: Rebecca of Gisborne - Some Scenes
Author: Rochvellet
Rating: PG
Characters: Everyone, and Rebecca
Disclaimer: I own nothing but Rebecca, who may appear to be strongly modelled on Isabella but in fact has been around a lot longer than she has!
NB: Spoilers right through all three seasons up to the end.
Author’s note the first: This is OC, and it features a personal little character I made up a long time ago. She’s called Rebecca (I thought up the name long before they created Kate’s mother!), and she’s Guy’s sister (I thought up the concept long before they created Isabella!), quite close to him in age, and also of course Isabella’s older sister. At 16 she was sent to marry the Earl of Durham, who was a nasty man who treated her very badly (I’ll get tired of saying how many concepts I thought up way back in 2006... I had this whole abuse storyline going on and then Isabella came along and stole most parts of it!). She appears in the series after 1x02, when she is recently widowed and comes back to find her brother. Then she’s in every episode up to the end of season 3. Please note that she comes purely from my head, and I understand that most of you may have no wish to think about a character that is so personal to me!
Rebecca of Gisborne - Some Scenes
Prologue - Departure (3x10, set in 1175)
“It was Father’s idea,” Rebecca said, putting a soothing hand on her brother’s arm.
Guy shook her off. “You can’t leave. You’re... you’re too young!”
“I’m sixteen!” she protested. “Guy, I don’t want to go... but Father says it is right. He wants me to secure a good marriage, before...”
“Before what?”
“Before he is disgraced. Oh Guy, I don’t know how to tell you!”
Guy turned on her, and a fire that she had not seen before was blazing in his eyes. “Tell me!”
“Father is a leper. He caught it in the Holy Land. People can’t see it now, but soon they will begin to notice, and-“
But Guy turned tail and ran away, ignoring his sister’s calls. That was the day his world began to fall apart.
Part I - Arrival (between 1x02 and 1x03)
Robin and the gang were very quiet, hiding behind assorted trees and foliage near the Great North Road. A cart was coming, the only one that had passed the forest boundary all day. They were ready to rob its occupier if it was a rich man...
Eventually the cart came into view, and they sprung their trap. Robin stood directly in front of it, an arrow fitted to his bowstring. The cart stopped, and the lone hooded figure sitting in it stopped the horses in alarm. The hood fell backwards, and their prey was revealed - a woman, hair long and dark, clothes made of the finest silks.
“Let me pass,” the woman said firmly.
“There’s a toll for passing this road,” Robin said. “Where are you coming from?”
“Durham,” she said, her eyes passing slowly from one outlaw to another. She wondered whether she might escape them, but she was surrounded. “I have just been widowed and am returning to my brother. I heard that he has taken over the lordship of Locksley...”
Part II - Bonchurch (1x09 without Eve)
Rebecca’s smile froze on her face. “Thank you,” she said.
Much frowned, unsure what he had done to be thanked for.
“For not telling me whatever Robin told you to tell me.”
“See!” Much exclaimed. “I knew you weren’t a spy! They were wrong not to trust you...”
But when Rebecca bit her lip, Much could see that they had been right after all. “I’m sorry,” she said. “But you must have known. Guy wanted me to prove my loyalty to him by spying on you.”
Much turned away, hurt. He had thought he was getting close to her, that she was genuinely interested in him, and in the welfare of Bonchurch. She seemed so nice...
“So what now?” Rebecca asked. “I have to tell Guy something, I’m his spy.”
“Well I don’t care!” Much said. “Go back to your brother and his conniving... his conniving tricks.”
“But I don’t want him to be able to use the black powder, Much,” she said. “Guy used to be a kind, thoughtful young man. But he’s changed, and if he has that kind of power, what will he become?”
“Well I can’t do anything about that, can I?”
Rebecca put her hand on his arm. “Yes you can. Tell me what Robin wanted you to tell me.”
Part III - Loyalty (2x01)
“Guy?” Rebecca said, stopping her brother, who was on his way to the Sheriff. “I... I saw something.”
“What is it?” Guy asked. When he saw that she was reluctant to speak, he pressed her. “We’ve talked about this, Rebecca. You swore you are loyal to me.”
“I am!”
“Then tell me. Is it Robin Hood?”
Rebecca gulped and closed her eyes, knowing what she was condemning the poor man to. “One of his men,” she said. “He went into the Trip half an hour ago. I think he’s still there.”
Part IV - Awakening (2x07)
As Allan was passing the storeroom, he noticed a figure inside, in the shadows. When he went closer, he could see that it was Rebecca, who had her hands over her face and seemed to be crying. “What’s up?” he asked gently.
Surprised that she was not alone, as she had thought she was, Rebecca removed her hands and looked at him, eyes wide and red and puffy. She had been crying. Then he noticed that her cheek was bleeding.
“Who did this to you?” Allan asked. When she did not reply, he realised he already knew. “It was Guy, wasn’t it?”
Rebecca shook her head. “He... he didn’t mean me any harm. I should not have angered him.”
“He should be taking care of you!” Allan exclaimed. “Maybe I should have a word with him...”
“No! Your position is precarious enough already!”
Allan smiled, and then, impulsively, he leaned down to kiss her lightly on the lips. He had caught her by surprise, but she began to respond to the second kiss.
“Allan!” shouted a sudden angry voice. It was Guy. Allan mumbled an apology and ran out to see what his new master wanted of him.
Rebecca was left alone, the taste of him on her lips. She put her hand to her mouth, and dared to smile, just a little, for the first time in many months.
Part V - Parting (2x12)
Rebecca woke with a start as a hand was placed firmly over her mouth. But as her eyes adjusted to the darkness of the little room in the Portsmouth Road Inn, she saw that it was Allan. She frowned, and got up and followed him very quietly out of the room, being careful not to wake the Sheriff or her brother.
“What’s happening?” she whispered when they were in the corridor.
Allan didn’t reply, he just looked at her with those wide blue eyes, which were now filled with worry.
Rebecca shook her head. “Oh no... Allan, no. Please.”
“I’m sorry, Bex.”
“You swore you’d be loyal to Guy! All those things he promised! The title and land and money! You’ll be giving all that up!”
“I know...”
“And me. You’ll be giving me up...”
“I have to do this, Bex. Robin and my friends might die.”
“They might already be dead, and it will all be for nothing!”
Allan shook his head. “I won’t stop loving you,” he said, and then he left her.
“Allan!” she hissed, but then she leaned back against the wall, tears in her eyes. She could wake her brother and make sure he wouldn’t get away. But of course, she would never do that. In silence, she crept back to her bed and wept.
Part VI - Reunited (2x13)
The Sheriff was up to something, and Rebecca knew it. When he was out of sight, she quickly found a horse in the stables - which was unwatched with everything that was going on - and followed. She could see him just ahead, not only the Sheriff but Marian too. Marian’s hands were bound.
The Sheriff had made Guy a promise that very day, that he would give him his blessing to marry Marian when they returned home. And yet here he was, taking her out into the desert. As they went out into the desert, it became increasingly difficult to follow closely, until finally she had lost them altogether and could hardly remember which way she was going or had come from.
Just then, something appeared on the horizon. As it swam into view in the heat, she realised it was a troop of soldiers on horseback, wearing white. The King’s men, she supposed. But considering that she would probably die out there if left alone, she rode towards them.
“Rebecca of Gisborne!” their leader shouted when he could see her properly. “Arrest that woman!” Things could hardly get any worse, and so she gave herself up.
They rode further on into the desert together, and Rebecca was feeling quite sick with the heat and could hardly tell one sand dune from another. But eventually something that was not sand came into view. There were wooden stakes sunk into the desert floor, with people tied to them. Robin. Robin and his men, and Marian, tied to Robin’s back. Allan...
Part VII - Estrangement (3x03)
Since her brother had come to trust her again, Rebecca knew where her place was. And now that she was managing Locksley in Guy’s absence, it was clear that her first duty had to be to protect her new-found people. And since the Sheriff was bound to notice if anyone in Locksley consorted with outlaws, and was then bound to tell Guy if and when he returned, it was not like she had any choice. But that didn’t make it easier. She waited alone in the woods, waited for him to come.
“Bex!” said a voice from behind her. He came closer and put his arms around her, kissing her neck.
For a moment, she gave in fully to the embrace. It would be their last, after all. She let her head rest on his shoulder, encircled his waist with her hands, nuzzled his hair with her face.
“Hey, what’s up?” he asked quietly, wondering why she was suddenly being so openly affectionate. Rebecca was always guarded - it was her way. She never gave in to him fully, completely. There was always a part of her that she held back, deep, in secret. But now she was brushing up close to him like a cat wanting attention. That surely meant something was wrong...
Then she broke the embrace, suddenly and completely, and took a pace back. He could feel the symbolism in her action, but didn’t want to know why she was doing it. “Bex...”
“We can’t be together any more, Allan. I have to protect people. It’s difficult. Please don’t come to Locksley again.”
“But Bex!”
“No, Allan. It’s over.”
Part VIII - Union (3x11)
As everyone was arguing over Robin’s sudden decision that Guy was joining the gang, Allan gently took Rebecca’s arm and led her away from the others. She checked that nobody was looking at them, and followed.
“Does this mean we’re on the same side again?” Allan asked.
Rebecca finally allowed a broad smile to cross her lips. “I think it does,” she said.
He leaned forward and kissed her, and she didn’t push him away. But after a few moments, she put a finger to his lips. “I have to go to York with Guy, it’s important. But when I get back...”
“Will you marry me?”
Rebecca stared at him. “What?” She gave a giddy little laugh.
“Marry me!”
“I... I’ll have to ask Guy!”
“Yeah, but what do you want?”
“You,” she said, and she kissed him again before going back to her brother’s side.
Author’s note the second:
Now that you’ve read all that, you may be interested in some context. During the first series, Rebecca is so thoroughly shocked by her brother’s behaviour (to whom she was very very lclose as a child) that she finds herself sympathising with the outlaws and occasionally helping them. But Guy demands her loyalty more and more, and so she ends up being sent to Bonchurch as a spy in 1x09 (Eve doesn’t exist in my universe - sorry!).
When Marian dumps Guy at the altar, Guy becomes more and more worried about her loyalty, and so at the beginning of season 2 she is desperate to prove herself to him. So, when she sees Allan (whom she knows a little already because she was with Tom before he died and conveyed his last words to his brother) enter the Trip in 2x01, she tells her brother. She feels guilty that Allan is tortured, but for several episodes comes to loathe him for what he is doing to his own friends (because she has a similar attitude to loyalty as Guy’s!). So, when Allan comes to work for Guy, she is surprised that she finds herself falling for his cheeky charms, and soon they are having a rather torrid affair (she didn’t think she would ever rediscover her sexual side after her abusive marriage, but he is the only thing that heals her). They think that Guy doesn’t know, but in 2x10 he sees them together and reveals that he has known for months. Rebecca is touched that her brother has allowed it to go on, putting her happiness first. Towards the end, Guy even suggests that is Allan is loyal then he will be rewarded with a title and Rebecca’s hand.
When Allan betrays Guy and goes back to Robin, at first she is angry with him. But at the end of season 2 she ends up being left in the Holy Land with the outlaws as Guy rides off with the Sheriff, and so she stays with Allan and he brings her home safely. But at the beginning of season 3 she makes it clear that she loves her brother and wants to save him from himself, and so she persuades him (in 3x02) that she never betrayed him in the Holy Land, but rather it was the Sheriff who conspired to take Marian away from him. When Guy is taken to Prince John, she is devastated, but becomes a stronger character as she fights to maintain control of Locksley in her brother’s name. The Sheriff, amused, allows her to stay on as Lady of the Manor, and she manages to bring new life to the village, encouraging industry and creating a program for repairing the church. But slowly all her good work is undone as Rufus and then Prince John wreck everything.
Rebecca tries to help Guy as he vies for power with the Sheriff, and helps him in his bid to become Sheriff. In 3x07, however, it is the people of Locksley she is concerned about in the drought, and she goes with Tuck and the gang to the Trent; on the way, of course, her love for Allan is rekindled, and they kiss passionately as the water flows back into the dry riverbed. But over the next episodes they are parted again. In 3x09, Rebecca’s chief concern is Isabella, because when she sees Thornton she realises that Isabella has been going through exactly what she went through. At the end of 3x09 she helps Isabella to fight Thornton off, but when Isabella kills him and threatens to lock her up she flees into the woods to find Guy. She is with Guy when Malcolm takes them hostage to learn about what happened to their parents - something Rebecca is keen to hear because she left Gisborne before her parents died and never got the full story.
When Guy joins the gang, Rebecca is delighted that she and Allan are on the same side again, and agrees to marry him. Guy eventually, somewhat reluctantly, agrees, and they are married in the forest when they get back from York. But then the events of 3x12 and 3x13 unfold, and Rebecca is soon to lose everything she loves...
