I hadn't realized (or remembered) that the Allan/Much bickering was there from the get-go. It was such a small interaction, yet it sets up their relationship so beautifully. Allan just slides into the group so effortlessly, breaking up a perfect twosome in Much's mind (I think). Those two are perfect together - the angel and the devil on Robin's shoulders.
And yes, you're right, they're a fantastic pair, aren't they? I remember that one of my first RH fics involved Much being very unhappy about Robin getting on so well with nasty harsh men like Allan :) Of course that was back in season 1 before I realised how much I'm in love with Allan!
He does grow on you. Much's "awe" factor is immediately apparent, but Allan has to sort of fester first, but then you realize that it's a good pain. I actually started watching the show thinking that Robin had a lot of potential for fangirling. SHHHH...Please don't tell anyone (especially Allan). It's embarrassing.
*lol* Robin always seemed a bit weedy to me, but I was just looking over icons I made in 2006 and he features quite a lot... I think I always just wanted to slash him with someone though :)
And yes, I think 'fester' is an oddly apt way to describe how Allan grows on you :) I'm pretty sure it was when he first started wearing black that I sat up and took notice.
The first time I watched 1x01, it didn't make much of an impression. I'm a history buff, and I was really jonesing for good period drama...and what I got was...well, NOT. Your first review reflects many of my own thoughts on the show at first watch

I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one who wasn't inclined to give it a good review right at the start! I think, more than decent period drama, I was hoping for something that got in line with moral commentary American and Americanesque TV shows that I was such a fan of back then (Buffy, Xena, Roar). I should really have taken a step back and appreciated it for what it was, I guess.
My sense is the first two episodes were written as a sort of pilot for the show, and all the characters are essentially cardboard cutouts of stock characters from the Robin Hood legend and other revisions of the legend. You know, I find that very convincing. There's something about episode 1 in particular (I hadn't thought of adding ep 2, but I do see what you mean) that comes across as an exercise in impressing people and as such has amazingly little depth - depth being one of

I read your old review and nearly had a heart attack when you said you didn't like Much. I was like "is this the same rochvelleth?" Other than that I agreed with you on pretty much everything else. When I first started watching I had actually missed the first episode and didn't see it until later. After the last episode I was excited to see the beginning but when I did I was like "is this the same show?" Very bad way to start off; glad I missed it or I might not have continued. I do enjoy the jailer from season 1 though. He just fit the part. And the part between Thorton and Much was priceless. =)
*lol* Yes, I couldn't believe I'd been quite so harsh either! I think maybe I was bitter because he was obviously cute and fluffy and yet wasn't characterised very well at first. Not that there's any defending what I said... *hangs head in shame*
It sounds like starting at episode 2 was a good way to watch it! I think if I'd seen ep 2 first I might have started off just loving it instead of complaining.
