Allan relaxed in the chair pulled up to the fire. This was the life, he thought. No shivering out in the forest, wondering when the next attack would come. Just a comfortable evening by the fire, followed by bed, with a hearty breakfast to greet you the next morning.

He'd been surprised when Gisborne had insisted that he sit by the grate, even when the knight himself had left the room. He'd been close to overheating, not a worry he'd ever had in winter before, when his new master had walked back into the room.

Allan heard the words, but they didn't made any sense. He swallowed hard, trying not to betray the horror he felt inside on his seemingly calm exterior. He shook his head slightly, hoping it would dislodge the wax which must be in his ears, causing him to mis-hear what had just been said.

"I might 'ave misheard wot you said," he started, "or misunderstood, not bein' used to your turn of phrase, but did you just suggest I spend the night in your bed, like man and wife."
Gisborne snorted dismissively. "Of course I'm not suggesting you do that," he said. Allan relaxed slightly, clear in his own mind that he wasn't in any danger now. The knight cleared his throat before continuing. "I wouldn't dream of suggesting you do that, any more than I would suggest to my breeches that they should cover my arse. I would just expect them to do what I needed them to do, without resistance. Let me be quite clear. I do not equate you with my breeches; they are of much greater value to me than you."

"If you was gonna treat me like that," asked Allan, "why were you so kind to me earlier? Why am I allowed pride of place by the fire?"
"Because,"replied the knight coolly, "I cannot abide someone with cold feet in my bed. Now, if you want to prevent a short rope and a long drop from making you a lot colder, you'll get up those stairs and show me what a wise decision I made letting you into my house."
