Remember
this post, where I was looking for a particular fic or perhaps a piece of meta? The one sentence I could remember most clearly was something like this: "You woke up every morning unable to remember what you'd done the day before; in some cases, unable to even remember who you'd been the day before."
I, uh, I found it. In one of my own unfinished fics. *facepalm*
An excerpt from the part that I did remember:
****************
"If you're going to sit here all night and keep me awake, you could at least tell me a story."
After a moment, he sighed, whether at the blank look that was all he got in response, or at himself, he wasn't sure. It was petty of him to take out the helplessness he felt on Jack.
"All right, I'll tell you a story, how about that." He re-settled himself against the bars. "Once upon a time...that's the traditional opening, isn't it? Yours, anyway. Ours is more--well, we didn't tell fairy tales, to start with. Childish escapism, that's what we would have called fairy tales. The closest equivalent we had is something like, 'When there were many times and places...'
"You see, the Time Lords fixed Gallifrey in time and space so that it would remain unchanged, protected. Before that was done, while we were still discovering the extent of our powers, it was chaos. You never knew, waking up, who you were now or what you'd done the day before. It was terrifying." He stopped abruptly. "That's what the legends say, anyway."
