Trigger warnings: Violence, trauma, blood/gore in the description and possibly more in the comments. Written prose-style but action tags are good too! Totally open to anyone. More OOC notes about the dream at the bottom. Also, going to work now so more tags after that.
(
the death of that cruel smile )
Rubi looked so- sad. why had he done this? was this a memory or some kind of horrible dream? he's so worried of what will happen if Rubi hears him crying on the ground behind him, but he can't hold the tears back. it was just so-
so sad. he sobs loudly in the silence, trying to wipe away his tears as they stream down his face. ]

The living reflection, and then suddenly, the sight of the child sliced into two. Utterly destroyed. Though he had promised to protect Elia forever.]

So he actually pulls the scythe halfway up for a blow before he -recognizes- the person on the ground. The crying person. His eyes go wide in shock and he freezes mid-strike. The scythe just hangs there--he's so surprised.]
....you're not here.

I-I- I-I'm sorry...
[ sorry this happened. sorry he didn't understand. sorry he was here. he was just...sorry about everything.
sorry about that poor child, and sorry about how sad Rubi looked. ]

Perhaps speaking Elia's name was a curse that had to draw him here. In this-- was it a dream?
So now he had seen and understood. At least Viktor wasn't attacking him, like Masumi had over something similar. But, perhaps he still would, later.]
Is it really you? [But why the apology?] ...Did you come here on purpose?

I-It's-...me. [ and slowly he'll shake his head, sniffling, shoulders shaking as he stares at his wrung hands in his lap. ]
N-No...I-I'm sorry I didn't mean- t-to pry. I-I'm sorry this happened- t-to you...

[He repeats it softly. The words aren't quite a question, but more of an echo.
No matter what, he can't understand the way humans react when they see him kill. Most often they are enraged and respond with violence equal to his own, even if they aren't directly involved. That usually startles him out of explaining his actions.
But this... is just as inexplicable. And somehow more terrible to hear. Sympathy and forgiveness from someone like Viktor, who was coming to mean as much to him as Elia had.
The words were painful to hear, as if from a blow. Though Rubi can't at all understand why.]
You must trust me very much, Viktor.

[ the sniffles in between his words make it hard to understand him unless he's listening closely. ]
I-I... I s-still trust you, R-Rubi. I-I just wish I- I u-understood. A-And t-this didn't h-have to happen...
Y-You're my friend.

He doesn't vanish the scythe (he doesn't trust this place, whether it's real or not,) but he does lower it. Then he crouches on the ground, kneeling next to Viktor.
He is no pretty sight himself, blood-spattered and his expression is strangely opaque. He feels so many things now and understands almost none of them.]
I didn't want you to understand, because I knew it would make you sad. Or, afraid of me.
[He reaches out a hand to touch Viktor's head. Partly to see if he would still allow it.]
Are you afraid?
Reply
I-I'm not afraid of you. I-I don't think- you'd h-hurt me.
Un...unless you h-had to...f-for some reason.

But, what is there for Rubi to fear still? He shakes his head in wordless confusion. Though at the last part Viktor says, his eyes widen. Could that come to pass even in Demeleier?]
No! This won't happen to you. You don't serve my enemies--you--
[Rubi shakes his head again, violently this time. His thoughts are disjointed and he can't make words of them--but he understands now, or thinks he might. This may be what he is afraid of.]

I'm sorry, Rubi... y-you knew him- r-right?

[Rubi places his other hand on Viktor's shoulder, leaning on him a bit for comfort without realizing it. The pain breaks across his face suddenly.
He should have expected him to ask, but what to say? He isn't the best at explaining such things. Ones that are terrible and personal, or perhaps alien to humans. How would Elle explain this?
No. He can't dismiss it the way she would 'you had no choice.']
...It is forbidden to access Heaven's Gate. The people here--they-- through their children, they seek to violate this law. They can't do it themselves. A long time ago, they traded their humanity for immortal souls.
[Another long pause.] That makes them as demons. But, their children are innocent.
[Rubi slowly looks up and over at the remains of the one human, then into the eyes of the still living one. He doesn't want to answer that last question. But he will.]
...that is Elia.

demons. children...
as Viktor looks over at Elia again, sadness flashes across his face and he winces, trying to hold back fresh tears. this was... horrible. Rubi had had to kill a friend...hadn't he? all because he was being used.
he'll move the hand he raised to rest on Rubi's back, moving the other as well until he's hugging him gently. ]
Th-That's horrible... I'm so sorry... f-for both of you- E-Elia and you...

As useful tools would be. Though, unfortunately, Elia hadn't understood the true goals of his own kind. He never believed the little that Rubi had tried to tell him.
These thoughts weigh on him now. He almost doesn't notice Viktor's hug at first. Then his distant, sad gaze widens in surprise. He tentatively copies him, wrapping his arms around the human as well. His grip tightens and he shudders--if he had tears, he would cry, but that's one human-like trait that golems weren't given.
There is more he wants to say, but he doesn't quite understand his reaction entirely. This kindness should be a comfort. But it's also painful... When he speaks, he sounds unsure.]
...Should you be sorry for me? It is terrible, but I have done this.

I feel sad this h-had to happen... b-but being mad at you- w-won't fix anything. I know you're a nice person- a-and you looked so sad when you did it...
[ Viktor pulls away slightly, face scrunching up. ]
I-I wish... the consequences of my powers could help me be better with words, too... [ unfortunately that wasn't the case. Viktor was confused about his own feelings - so he could only say what he felt as he felt it. he didn't understand it himself. ]
But... at least I know that um- y-you're my friend, Rubi. And... you're supposed to be there for friends when- when they need it.
This is all I can do but... [ he'll give Rubi a gentle squeeze again. useless, but... ]
