I went to the New Beverly and saw double features two nights in a row!  Thursday night, Devon and I went to a very special edition of the Grindhouse screenings hosted by these guys who basically have their own similar screenings in Texas.  We saw Julie Darling and Poor Pretty Eddie.  There was a third feature, but we didn't get to stay because the next morning,  I went back to my temp job.  They started me on a fucking Friday.  Bastards.

Bitterness aside, the two movies we did see were fan-fucking-tastic.

Julie Darling was an awesome early 80's movie starring Sybil Danning (who was there in person) as a stepmother who is being usurped by her teenage daughter (the ultra-hot Isabelle Mejias) who has some crazy daddy issues.  There's this crazy murder-for-hire plot involving the bag boy who murdered her actual mother and lots of nutty twists.  It's coming to DVD in August, so do yourself a favor and check it out when you can.

Next up was Poor Pretty Eddie (aka Redneck County Rape).  It's  your typical rape/revenge movie, if your idea of a typical rape/revenge movie stars Shelly Winters and  Slim Pickens.  Leslie Uggams stars as a famous singer (who happens to be black) on hiatus from the limelight, when her car breaks down in a creepy southern town.  It's a fucked up movie anyway, but the best part is that the protagonist is so completely hostile towards everyone (even before it's warranted by all the rapings) that you're not sure who to cheer for.

Also, I won a bunch of porn sampler DVDs in the Grindhouse raffle.  Hell yeah!

Tonight, I went to the double feature by myself.  First up was Surf II.  There is no Surf 1, and one of the taglines for Surf II is "SURF 2 - END OF THE TRILOGY."  It's an 80's teen comedy about a bullied nerd turned mad scientist (Eddie Deezen, who was there in person) who creates a toxic cola that turns unsuspecting teenagers into vicious surf zombies in order to get revenge on the cool kids.

Then there was Carnival Magic.  Al Adamson (probably my favorite director of all time) made this movie and attempted to self-distribute it.  He plastered a 'G' rating on it without submitting it to the MPAA for review, even though the movie has domestic abuse, tons of revealing clothing on people who shouldn't be wearing it, threats of vivisection, and possibly a woman giving a chimpanzee a handjob.  Oh people, I wish you could see this movie.  But there is only one known print in existence, and it doesn't get screened much.  I came home and wrote down as much as possible about this movie in case I never see it again.  I'll pass down the story orally to my children if I have to.

They also showed a bunch of trailers.  One of them was for Voyage of the Rock Aliens, which I now must track down because it looked amazing and is Ruth Gordon's last movie.
