Dear Yuletide Writer:
Hi. First of all, I love you just a little bit (who am I kidding? Can I have your babies?) for knowing the fandoms I requested. See, there are levels of squee, and there are LEVELS OF SQUEE, and all four that I asked for are levels of SQUEE. I have literally never read any fic for these fandoms, so I really wouldn’t sweat this assignment too much-I am so easy to make happy with these fandoms. Your fic will have the merit of being compared to absolutely nothing else and especially because it’s Yuletide, I’ll just be so happy to see a story with my name on it!
However, if you do prefer more guidance or whatnot, here are a few things I thought too superfluous to put in the sign-up form:
Esen-alit-Quar/Paul Ragem - I know I mentioned that any kind of Esen-femmeslash would be great, and I’d just like to add that this in particular includes Esen/Skalet. But essentially ANYTHING set in this universe would make me happy, because these are my favorite SF books of all time, and I crave fiction for them like a junkie deprived of her hit. Oh, I should also note-Czerneda’s writing style isn’t what makes me like her books; it’s mainly the characters. (And the aliens. The aliens are so awesome! And I must admit that many of Esen’s line crack me the hell up.) So no pressure to emulate her style, unless you wanted to.
Donald Ripley/Jeremy Powder Reed - If you did want to write slash, some Jeremy/his classmates (in particular the bully whose name is just completely escaping me) sidenotes would be fine by me, too. (I mean, did you see the way the bully was looking at him after Jeremy saved him? Wow. O_O)
Arthur Curry aka AC aka Orin - So, actually, I should mention that a wacky crossover romance would make me really happy. I’d love to see A.C. paired up with just about any character I’ve ever fangirled over, which is, um, a lot of characters so I won’t list them all here, but if you poke around my journal hopefully it’s obvious? And when I said I didn’t want a focus on a het romance, I meant that I didn’t want a het romance from the show canon, but A.C. and, say, Claire from The Invisible Man? Would be amazing! As would A.C./Darien, actually. As you can see, I find A.C. very pan-shippable, and if you happen to, as well, go to town with him with my blessing.
And, of course, McCaffery and A.C. gen would be fantabulous and lovely. Or if you wanted to expand on his universe more, too, that’d be awesome-so much potential for development there. I’m vaguely familiar with his comics history (read: have visited Wikipedia), but have no preference for whether you reference it/retcon/build on it or just make something up. Either is perfectly suitable.
In summation: PLAY WITH A.C. HAVE LOTS OF FUN PLAYING WITH HIM. :D
Joanna Eris/Stephen Wilson - The main thing I don’t want on this one is fluff without some kind of build-up. I adore the canon, so if AU isn’t your thing, keeping to the spirit of the movie canon would make me very happy.
So, about what kind of writing I like. Hmmm. Well, I’m pretty equally fond of humor, romance, angst, character studies, fluff, and to a certain extent PWPs. (I have no problem with fade-to-blacks, either). I like smut better than porn, if that makes any sense.
I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of sad endings or character death, but if they’re well-done, I can love them, too. I’m way more into character than I am plot. Things where my attention starts to wander include: long fight/battle sequences, geography (I have a really hard time reading about geography, it’s a thing), and extremely detailed sex scenes that go on for pages and pages. That’s what I meant by porn vs. smut, I think-I tend to like my sex sensual.
I have an extreme weakness for lyrical prose, vignettes, angsty character study that ends happily, non-linear stories (especially if they change tenses in text, omgtenseporn!), snarky banter, especially during or right before sex, and sometimes, I really love second person. My biggest surefire kinks are hand-holding, doppelcest, and fruitporn. The main things I’m averse to are any kind of excretory kinks, noncon (dubcon can work for me, though) and excessive gory violence.
If you’re really curious about what I like to read, I have a lot of
recs posted, and in particular, there are my
favorites, those fics that just make me happy for reasons that would be hard to articulate.
BUT. I only write all this in case you’re like me, and like to have some kind of restrictions to work with. I am firmly and thoroughly convinced that if you are happy with what you write, or if you write from a place of inspiration, none of my preferences really matter. I like to treat writing as an organic process and wouldn’t want to impede yours at all, so if you find yourself stressing about something I’ve said, toss it out. Seriously-half my kinks come from reading really good fic. So if it works for you, it’ll likely work for me, too. Despite this long-ass letter, I’m really very easy to please!
And did I mention? Thank you. Thank you so much for offering to write my fandom/s! Thank you so much for participating in this exchange. Few things warm the cockles of my fannish heart more than small fandoms and people who are willing to give them love. ♥
