I like to tag according to tiers (even though the LiveJournal system apparently HATES this concept and makes it as difficult as possible to do so).

I don't really think of icons, banners and the like as fanart. I would think of them as a fanwork, but not as art. I use fanart for original art. Icons are more akin to scans and manips to me. Manips have always been labeled as such in any fandom that I've been involved in in the past, and never placed in the "art" category -- which is probaby why I think this way. LOL

Yeah, it's interesting the distinctions we make. I've always wondered why icons aren't considered fanart, because as an artist, I can't help but think of them as such. I guess I don't really see holding a pencil vs. holding a mouse as so different. But most of the internet disagrees with me on that! *g*

Seems to me like you could have 2 master categories: Fan Media and Other Media. Under Fan Media, you could have icons, manips, fan vids, etc, and a separate category for original art. Other Media would include vids and pics that haven't been tampered with from their original. *shrug*

Wow, okay, this comment totally sent me off into three hours of thinking about categorizing. I ended up making a link with multiple tags listed instead of master categories because I figured people would find them too confusing. But that's a good distinction! I may have to use it in the future :D

That was my thinking. And I also categorize my art as graphics. So much overlap, egads.

Exactly! murklins customized trans_literate's layer so that--when viewed in the community's native style--all the tags on the side tier just the way I want. It's so AWESOME and HAPPYMAKING!

I do, I know! But I also enjoy this problem. It makes me feel very accomplished when I indulge in it.

God, the last time I wrote porn it was for the Porn Battle. And that was practically years ago, in internet time. What's happened to me? Even that absurdly hot icon isn't helping, waaaaah!
