All work and no play... turns Terry into Bruce

Apr 05, 2010 19:46

Back home, Terry McGinnis had had the reputation of being that guy that was never around. And when he was around, he was usually only half-awake, if even that. It mostly came from being Batman - spending most of the night patrolling left the young man with little time to sleep besides in class. And after school, he'd have to leave for 'work' to ( Read more... )

Of the things Trudy had encountered so far on the ship, the library felt the most like home. Her technology had advanced to the point of tablets and touchscreens, so she felt right at home.

The material on X-wing fighters had taken a little bit of time to track down - it seemed like the library was in a state of half-done organization, and whoever it was working on it hadn't gotten to the nonfiction manuals yet. As Trudy tried to find a place to sit down and read, she was momentarily distracted by the sound of snoring.

Trudy grinned a little as she walked up to the kid and nudged his chair with her foot. "Hey, you're going to get a crick in your neck if you stay like that," she said.

"Guh?" Terry sat up rather quickly, with a bit of jump. His semi-asleep brain had seemed to think he was back in school, and a teacher had, once again, called him out for sleeping in class.

"Heh... yeah, I guess," he said, once he realized that he was still on the ship. "At least it's not as bad as falling asleep on a keyboard." Which hurt. And yet he did all the time, anyways.

"Uh, I don't think we've met..." he said, trying to smooth over the awkwardness of his sudden leap-to-consciousness. He held out a hand. "I'm Terry. Terry McGinnis."

"Captain Trudy Chacon," she said, taking his hand and shaking it firmly. He looked kind of like some of the recruits she'd caught napping in the mess once - he had the vaguely guilty look of someone who was used to falling asleep in places he wasn't supposed to.

"Guess the reading isn't all that riveting, huh?" she asked, nodding to his tablet. "Mind if I sit?"

"Sure, go ahead," he nodded towards one of the other chairs at the desk. Then he glanced back down at the tablet. "Not really. I didn't think computer hacking would be so boring. A friend of mine makes it sound like it's totally shway, but it just makes me tired."

Spike had found the complete Passions collection, and he was going to catch up on everything he'd missed.

That was the plan, anyway. It was hard to pay attention when some idiot was snoring like a broken engine just a little ways away.

Spike managed to ignore it for all of three minutes before he pulled his lighter out of his pocket and threw it at the boy's head. He didn't use his full strength, but he still threw it pretty hard.

This would be one of the times Terry's thick skull was a good thing. The lighter bounced off his head, enough to wake him up, but it didn't hurt too badly.

He blinked a few times, then sat up. He looked around at his desk, trying to find whatever had hit him. He spotted the lighter next to his elbow.

"Hey, what dreg threw this at me?" He called out. Boy really had no respect for the quiet rule of the library, did he?

"That'd be me," Spike said, holding his hand out for it back. "If you're going to sleep, at least have the decency not to sound like an injured bear while you're doing it."

Now, Terry may have just apologized, tossed the lighter back to its owner, and been down with it. If Blondy McBritish hadn't insulted him. Terry had never taken insults well.

"Oh, I'm so sorry," he retorted, voice just covered in sarcasm, as he tossed the lighter up and down in the palm of his hand. "Thank you for so politely telling me I was being too loud."

It was time for "work" for little Vivio. For the most part, she enjoyed being the Media Library's impromptu librarian. It gave her something to do, some sort of purpose.

And as she continues trying to put everything away for the day, she hears the snoring from within the library.

Curiosity set in and the little girl began trying to find the source of it... and found Terry passed out.

Both she and her device, Sacred Heart, sighed and shook their heads (well, Vivio sighed), then went to nudge Terry.

"Um... excuse me?" Vivio called out. "You're... snoring a bit too loudly..."

Terry groaned when he was nudged, slowly opening his eyes. "Huh? Oh, uh, sorry," he said, then realized who was talking to him. No matter how many times he saw children on the ship, it still bugged him. He didn't like the idea of little kids getting caught up in this war. He hadn't really seen this girl around before, but then again, he hadn't been making a real effort to get to meet people.

"Um... do you have any family here, kid?" he asked. His eyes showed his genuine concern - seeing a kid alone, here or back home, brought out the caring side of Terry. He really did want to make sure she was okay, and not alone.

"Huh? Y-Yes, I do. Nanoha-mama and Fate-mama!" Vivio said. "I'm Vivio Takamachi and I'm the librarian here...!" Sacred Heart nodded as she said that.

"Sorry for waking you up, but I didn't want anyone else be interrupted if they came here." The sheepish grin on her face showed that she didn't mean to worry him as well.

She had wasn't alone - that was good. Terry didn't press the matter further, content in knowing the girl had people looking out for her.

"Sorry," he said with a bit of smile. "I guess I didn't realize I was so tired. Didn't mean to be so loud."

Oh how many times had Indy seen this before? He'd watched countless students work themselves to the point of physical exhaustion (Hell, he'd done it himself a few times, though it took more than books to bring him down), and all the same, they'd end up slumped over a desk in the library. It seemed that the ship wasn't too different from Indy's home, though the similarities showed up in the oddest places.

He though about letting the kid sleep, but the snoring was rather disruptive. Indiana cleared his throat loudly.

The sound of someone clearing their throat was all too familiar to Terry. Some of his teachers would often come up behind him and do that when he fell asleep in class. He sat up, expecting to find himself in class, with a teacher hovering over him and scowling, and his friends rolling their eyes. He was actually a bit disappointed when he realized he was still in the ship.

"Ugh," he groaned, and rubbed his neck, which had a bit of cramp. "Slag, when did I fall asleep?" He'd actually thought he'd been making decent progress, trying to learn things to make him a better Batman. It was a bit embarrassing to realized it had only just put him to sleep.

"No idea, kid," Indy dwindled on that for a moment before smirking just slightly. He didn't understand the slang but geeze was this just like his university back home.

"Might be better off heading back to your room now. Snores aren't always appreciated in the library."

Terry was a pretty light sleeper, so the strange sounds woke him up pretty easily. He sat up and stretched, then looked around for the source of the noises. He glanced past the blue... thing... and then did a double take. The noises were coming from it. But he wasn't really sure what it was.

"Um... hi?"

You'd think a guy from a time period when people could mix their DNA with animals and other weird, crazy stuff was something one saw one a daily basis would be used to the oddities roaming around the ship. You'd be wrong. Terry stared at the blue thing, especially once it started talking. It was just so... weird.

"Uh... no, I won't hurt you," he said haltingly.
