It seemed unreal, and yet Kate should have known. They should have looked harder. Other heroes came back before, it wasn't completely surprising for her. Even her father was back. But months past, and they were sure of it. Sure Cassie was gone forever ( Read more... )

Hydroponics, Jamie had found, made for an excellent place to practice on his chanter when he wasn't in the mood to have people around. All that was needed was a quiet, out of the way spot and he could play to his hearts content.

On his way through to do just that, he spots one of the beasties nosing at something in the grass. Moving closer, he realizes that the something is actually his fellow Ranger, who seems about to be awoken from what looks like a much needed sleep.

Waving away the beastie with a quiet, "Shoo," Jamie considers leaving Kate to rest, but then changes his mind and settles in next to her. He has something to ask her anyway, so he might as well work on some finger exercises while he waits for her to wake up.

Kate turned in her sleep as the beastie wandered off, and gradually woke up. She yawned and stretched before blinking with surprise upon noticing Jamie.

"Hey, you play?"

Catching the movement out of the corner of his eye, Jamie turns towards Kate and smiles. "Aye. I've played the pipes since I was a wee lad. My father taught me, back when he was the clan piper."

He holds out the chanter so she can look if she wants. "Hope ye don't mind my keeping ye company while ye rested. Ye looked like ye could use it."

Kate carefully took the chanter from his hand, and studied it with interest. She was more familiar with stringed instruments, but as a student of music other instruments fascinated her as well.

"We should play together sometime, I can bring my cello. And it's fine. Recent mission really wore me out." Physically and emotionally in fact.

"I'd like that. Although I'll likely not use the full pipes. They're a wee bit louder than the cello." It's the flip side for him - he's more familiar with woodwinds but has some knowledge of stringed instruments. "I'll bring them, though, so ye can get an idea of what they're like, if ye want."

The word 'mission' catches his attention, and Jamie glances over at Kate, curiously. "Was it the same mission that Billy was on? The one he put the message up about?"

"That's fine, I look forward to it."

She nodded, "It was a distress signal, and we found Cassie. My best friend had been alive and hurt all this time. Those things were torturing her, and we had no idea."

"Torturing..." For a moment, Jamie looks quite dismayed, then his lips press together in a scowl. "Those things? The people who captured her, ye mean? If I had known that, I would have shown them a thing or two."

It's probably for the best that Jamie didn't go along on that particular mission. He's still a bit new at this leadership thing, and his impulsive nature might have caused problems - especially in the face of torture.

"They'll not bother her again, will they?"
