Relief and exhaustion [Open]

It seemed unreal, and yet Kate should have known. They should have looked harder. Other heroes came back before, it wasn't completely surprising for her. Even her father was back. But months past, and they were sure of it. Sure Cassie was gone forever ( Read more... )

Billy hadn't been to Hydroponics in quite some time, so he thought it would be worth checking out again. The life that resided there was as vibrant as ever, inviting him in.

Steering clear of the famous 'beer tree', he circled the grass in search of a place to sit and think. When he thought he'd found the perfect spot, it seemed to be already occupied. By Kate, if his eyes weren't deceiving him. Given all that she'd been through, it wasn't a surprise to him that she was exhausted.

Deciding to let her sleep for a little while longer, Billy instead removed his jacket and draped it over her, sitting guard. They could talk when she was ready.

She turned in her sleep, and curled on her side. Unconsciously, the jacket was hugged closer as she napped a while longer.

Some time later, her blue eyes blinked open gradually.

"Hmmm?" she murmured quizzically, and eyed the jacket with sleepy confusion.

Billy was startled out of his quiet half-sleepy meditation by her movement, coming back to awareness by falling back on his rear and blinking at her.

"Kate, hey," he whispered, patient enough to stay there a while longer. "Some of the wildlife was getting a little too curious with you. I sat here to chase them off."

She sat up, and crawled closer to him as the jacket slipped away from her.

"Billy, you ok? And sorry, didn't mean to fall asleep."

Hydroponics, Jamie had found, made for an excellent place to practice on his chanter when he wasn't in the mood to have people around. All that was needed was a quiet, out of the way spot and he could play to his hearts content.

On his way through to do just that, he spots one of the beasties nosing at something in the grass. Moving closer, he realizes that the something is actually his fellow Ranger, who seems about to be awoken from what looks like a much needed sleep.

Waving away the beastie with a quiet, "Shoo," Jamie considers leaving Kate to rest, but then changes his mind and settles in next to her. He has something to ask her anyway, so he might as well work on some finger exercises while he waits for her to wake up.

Kate turned in her sleep as the beastie wandered off, and gradually woke up. She yawned and stretched before blinking with surprise upon noticing Jamie.

"Hey, you play?"

Catching the movement out of the corner of his eye, Jamie turns towards Kate and smiles. "Aye. I've played the pipes since I was a wee lad. My father taught me, back when he was the clan piper."

He holds out the chanter so she can look if she wants. "Hope ye don't mind my keeping ye company while ye rested. Ye looked like ye could use it."

Kate carefully took the chanter from his hand, and studied it with interest. She was more familiar with stringed instruments, but as a student of music other instruments fascinated her as well.

"We should play together sometime, I can bring my cello. And it's fine. Recent mission really wore me out." Physically and emotionally in fact.

Tony had heard something about the hub-bub - Cassie was alive. That was something of a relief, actually. It made one less that they'd lost so far. They hadn't lost many, but if the war started heating up they were bound to lose more. Many more. That was life. That was war.

He still wasn't looking forward to it.

He'd gone looking for Kate and he'd finally found her in hydroponics. Asleep. He shook his head with a little smile and then plopped himself down next to her, propped up on his elbows and took in the scenery. He'd give her a few more minutes before he tried to wake her up.

Maybe she could sense him in her sleep, or notice the familiar warmth. As it was, she curled closer to him, snuggling against Tony as she slept peacefully. Her mouth drew up in a content soft smile.

Tony had to smile - he couldn't really help it. He wrapped an arm around her and settled in to wait. There wasn't anything pressing - although he did want to make sure she was doing alright after finding out her dead friend was really alive.

Kate sleepily blinked her eyes as she slowly woke up in stages. She snuggled some more, and then lifted her head with pleased surprise seeing him there.

"Hey, hon. Must have drifted off," she yawned and smiled.

Taking care of a growing caterpillar alien-like green dog named, of all things, Dog was a tiring business, even if you were the wunderkind. Lash mostly went with it (still quite unsure if it was male or female or asexual or...SOMETHING it was called It for now) tied around in a bright red leash, as she had seen some pictures of kids with their dogs.

Recently it had been a lot more sluggish than before, and Lash wasn't sure why. It looked...tired? At first she thought she had been feeding it bad things for its diet, but it still ate food. In fact it ate even more than before. Having its life as her responsibility was rather weird for her, but since it had demanded a walk that morning, she had followed along, content to watch it's tiny little feet waddle across the fields.

That's when she noticed Kate and gave her a wave, unknowing she was possibly still sleeping.

Kate slept on, and only shifted in her sleep as another creature casually sniffed her side. There was a snort before it moved on. She turned over more on her side, and it was more obvious that she was still sleeping at the moment.

Oh well then! Lash didn't feel like bothering her ranger teammate, knowing all too well how important sleep could be in a ship like this. The fields were plenty big to move a creature like hers around, after all.

Unfortunately, Dog decided that this was the perfect moment to run around her and make the lease tighten across her legs. She fell rather unceremoniously close to the other girl with a thud.

"OW!"

Kate jerked up and her eyes flew open.

"What?!" She looked around, and then blinked at Lash, and her pet?

"Lash? You ok?"
