Title: Fright Night
Fandom:
Pairing: Donghae/Kibum, Kyuhyun/Sungmin, Eunhyuk/Hyoyeon
Rating: PG
Word Count: 3213 words
Summary: They're only supposed to drop by for a visit. For some reason, things never really work out for Donghae.
Notes: Okay, so this is the usual. Crack, crack, crack. AU, there’s some really bad horror movie clichés, they’re there for a reason, and yes the name of the town is Silent Hollow. Don’t judge me. Also, I do not claim to write SNSD well.
It was just a typical road trip to Kibum’s family reunion, and the only reason it happened was because Hyukjae’s more responsible girlfriend promised to drive them wherever they wanted. They were trying to get out of their crappy hometown, and have fun. Sungmin and Kyuhyun were distracting the driver from the backseat, because Hyoyeon found herself yelling at them to keep it PG-13, since Donghae was still in the vehicle.
To keep him from getting restless, they let him play the alphabet game on his own, and drove for another hour while he tried to think of somewhere interesting. It wasn’t until they were filling up at a gas station in a secluded town that it was decided.
“There.” Kibum said. The five of them stared at him.
“How cliché.” Kyuhyun said, and Hyoyeon pulled into the driveway of the abandoned Kim Mansion. The lack of parking was only the beginning of their problems.
---
The power seemed to have been cut, and Donghae hadn’t felt the need to grab a flashlight, so when he went into the closest bedroom to check for anything useful, he wasn’t expecting to find the hallway empty after he came out. It was empty and quiet, and dark.
“Kibum?” Donghae was wandering around the halls of the decrepit old mansion, looking for his potential love interest. Had this been a real horror movie, Kibum would have realized his feelings for Donghae were more than just friendship before he disappeared.
Instead, Donghae was stuck searching the rooms, with the possibility of an axe murderer lurking behind every door he checked and no promise of sex at the end. This was their innocent road trip gone to hell. Where Kibum and his non-existent family had gotten to, he would probably never know if the blood all over the walls was anything to judge by. His brain was helpfully supplying creepy music to go along with his wandering, which only made things worse.
The only reason he’d told the others to stay outside was so that he could meet Kibum’s family alone and he would have charmed the pants right off them. Except for the part where they were missing. Also, the blood put a damper on things. Donghae didn’t even want to talk about the one bathroom he’d gone into.
Sungmin and Hyukjae were hopefully still out in the van, but there was always the chance that they had escaped Hyoyeon and Kyuhyun, so Donghae was ready for them to pop out of a room at any moment. Well, they didn’t pop out of a room.
“I’m going to eat your children!” someone shrieked in his ear, and he jumped and screamed, clawing at the air as he spun around. There were several things wrong with this situation. First of all, Donghae was, at his best, a jumpy person and Sungmin knew that. Second, why couldn’t they just stay out in the van? They were the worst best friends ever and he regretted talking to them in kindergarten.
“God, can you just shut up, this is really serious. There is blood on the walls in there. And Kibum is missing.” Donghae waved his hands for greater effect, but it didn’t seem to work, since Hyukjae was staring at a painting, and Sungmin was messing around with a suit of armor.
“Oh sorry, were you saying something? I mean, I swear I heard, ‘Oh Sungmin, how do you keep your boyfriend in line so well?’ but I couldn’t be sure.” As soon as he finished speaking, Hyukjae screamed rather girlishly, and Donghae jumped around again to see Hyoyeon with her hand resting on his shoulder.
“Was that really necessary?” she made a face, and Hyukjae nodded.
“Where’s Kyuhyun?” Sungmin asked pleasantly, “Oh, oh wait, is he trying to scare me too? Oh that is just adorable.” Kyuhyun appeared from around the corner then, and stared at them.
“I’m not five. I don’t get my amusement from randomly scaring people. Hyukjae, there’s a beetle on your shoulder.” He was completely serious, until Hyukjae started swatting at his shoulder. Everyone watched on in amusement.
“What was that?” Hyoyeon asked suddenly, making everyone jump. They listened carefully and only then noticed the scraping noise further down the hallway.
“Oh my god, we’re gonna die here!” Donghae stage whispered, wringing his hands together, and waiting for someone to tell him where to run.
“Why didn’t we stay in the van?” Hyukjae sobbed, pulling Hyoyeon’s arm in the direction of the exit.
“Guys, shut the hell up for a second.” Sungmin put his hand over Kyuhyun’s mouth before he could add anything. The sound was indeed coming closer, so he motioned for them to run in the opposite direction. “Here!” They all ended up in a bedroom, which was thankfully blood spatter free.
“We need to find Kibum.” Donghae whined, and everyone nodded. The noise had disappeared during their panicky escape, and now that the axe murderer, or whatever it was, was gone, it was about time they went in search of their other friend.
“Well, when did you lose him?” Hyoyeon asked, kneeling down beside Donghae, beating Sungmin to the punch. It was not a good idea to let him try and comfort someone, since he’d make things worse, because his idea of comfort was questionable.
“I didn’t lose him! I was trying to see what was in one of the rooms, and when I turned around, he was gone.” Hyoyeon nodded, but before she could continue, Sungmin broke into the conversation.
“Oh my god! What if that’s his blood!” his concern was clearly false, because they could all see that evil little smile of his. Donghae jumped up and rushed out into the hallway, probably to continue searching.
“You. You are an ass.” Donghae heard her say, and then she was running along beside him. “Don’t believe him. He’s just having way too much fun with this.”
---
“Should we follow?” Hyukjae asked, now lacking the only person who was likely to defend him.
“No. We’re going to look for the basement.” Kyuhyun brushed off his clothes, and glanced out into the hallway. “There’s nothing out there now.”
“Why are we looking for the darkest, creepiest area in the building?” Hyukjae looked at his companions. “You know, other than the fact that you’re both freaks.”
“Because, if you were a creepy axe murderer, where would you take your victims?” Sungmin’s idea made sense, and Hyukjae was ready to go along with it, as long as the two of them weren’t planning to cut their losses the second they heard that noise.
“Well, okay...” Hyukjae followed them as they carefully pushed each door open, checking for any staircases that led down. The entire first level was made up of bedrooms, and a lot of them seemed to have some kind of unknown, gory back story. One bathroom was particularly gruesome. Even Sungmin admitted that the whole thing was getting creepy, and that only added to Hyukjae’s worries.
“Look!” Kyuhyun whispered, pointing to the far end of the hall. Another man was standing there, watching them, and Hyukjae wondered how they’d missed that.
“Oh well, I figured you would have noticed me by now.” he said, crossing his arms, and sauntering forward. “What are you doing here?”
Not one to be afraid of someone he could physically overpower, Sungmin put his hands on his hips, and stood in front of the other man.
“We’re looking for a friend of ours. Have you seen him?” he asked sweetly. His entire appearance had switched from ‘this is fun’ to ‘I’m just concerned about the wellbeing of a friend’.
“I’ve been busy. I haven’t seen this friend of yours. Why don’t you try asking our idiot sheriff?”
“Well, a few of our other friends are probably hopelessly lost in your house.” Sungmin laughed, “So if you happen to see them, could you let them know we went to ask around outside the mansion?”
“Yeah, whatever.” He waved his hand, but froze, his eyes fixed behind them. “Youngwoon. You’re not allowed here after the mess you made last time!” Hyukjae glanced over his shoulder, and saw a man in a uniform leaning against the wall.
“I’m going, don’t worry. We saw some kids breaking into the house, and wondered if you needed some help. Looks like you’ve got them all rounded up though. Good for you, getting things done on your own now.”
“Actually...”
“You be quiet. And you get out.” Heechul said, and Youngwoon seemed to listen; he disappeared around a corner, while the owner looked them over again. “Follow me.” They trailed him into a dark stairwell.
“Guys, he’s taking us to the basement.” Hyukjae said. The stairs had dark stains on them, and there were scratch marks along the walls. “This was the worst idea you’ve ever had.”
“Oh by the way, I’m Sungmin.” They ignored him, and continued to follow the man down a dark hallway.
“I’m Heechul. And this is where you’ll be staying.” He swung a door open, and gestured for them to go inside. Hyukjae had no idea why he was following his friends, who seemed perfectly happy being led to their death, but in he went. As predicted, the door slammed shut after them.
“Well, he’s accommodating.” Kyuhyun had recovered his sarcasm, and tried the knob. No good.
“Listen, if we die here, Sungmin, you have to tell Hyoyeon I love her. And to carry on without me, and-“ his words were cut off by a loud scraping noise outside the door. The knob began to turn, and Hyukjae felt Sungmin push him forward.
---
“This room looks just like the last one we were in. Aren’t those the same blood stains? I wonder if the bathtub is filled with blood.” Hyoyeon was just trying to make herself feel better, but the more blood they saw in the rooms, the more they thought Kibum’s was possibly going to be there too, in the near future.
“I’d like to stop talking about the blood now. Let’s talk about... Hyukjae. Tell me about how you and Hyukjae met.” She gave him a funny look, probably because they had met through him, and the mention of his best friend did nothing to allay their fears.
“Donghae, there’s someone over there.” Hyoyeon pointed, and sure enough, there was an unfamiliar shadow moving towards them. Using the darkness as a cover they slid unnoticed into another room. The person stopped right outside their door, and Hyoyeon clamped a hand over Donghae’s mouth.
“Oh, Ryeowook. Did you find the others?”
“No, they weren’t in any of the rooms I checked.” Donghae thanked every star he’d ever wished on that they hadn’t been in any of those rooms.
“And dinner?”
“I’ll start it once we find them.” The two people seemed to go separate ways, and Hyoyeon finally released Donghae.
“We have to get out of here. They’re cannibals. We’ll go get the police, and then... we’ll bring them here, and we’ll get our friends back.” Donghae tried to sound more determined than he felt, but he would save his friends from being eaten by whoever those weirdoes had been.
Rather than going the quiet route, they ran for it. Hyoyeon led the way, because she had actually been paying attention to where they were going, and how to get back to the entrance. Nobody seemed to be following them, and once they were outside they made for the nearby police station.
The building, like all the others in the little town, seemed to be falling apart. And since small towns apparently could not afford to have more than three officers, Donghae got to meet the Silent Hollow police force all at once.
“I’m Youngwoon. The sheriff here. That’s Jungsu. He’s...”
“Very pleased to meet you.” the smaller, friendlier looking man cut in, and came forward to shake Donghae’s hand.
The third man hung back by the wall. “I’m Donghee. What did you need?”
“Well, that mansion...” Donghae didn’t even get to finish explaining. The three officers exchanged a look, and that seemed to be the end of the conversation.
“Don’t worry, we’ll tell him to keep it down.” Youngwoon said, and went back to scribbling at his desk. Jungsu smiled at them, and picked up a stack of files.
“That’s not...”
“Come on Donghae. Let them do their job.” Hyoyeon pulled him out of the office, making it clear with a look that he was to remain silent. They hid outside the door.
“He should have learned by now, damn it.” They could hear the chair creak back on its legs, and papers shuffling.
“Well, he’s your cousin; you should be the one to deal with it. Talk to him at dinner tonight.” The third man agreed, and then the room fell silent. They didn’t seem to realize that their conversation had been overheard. It slowly dawned on him that the police were working with the inhabitants of the mansion to cover things up.
Hyoyeon led them to a secluded bench, and sat Donghae down, because he looked close to tears.
“We are going to have to save them ourselves. Nobody here can be trusted, we have to assume everyone knows what’s going on, and that they are against us.” She put her hands on his shoulders, and he nodded.
“We are going to save Hyukjae, and Kibum. And Sungmin and Kyuhyun, if it’s not already too late.” he said, gaining a little more of his enthusiasm back.
“Donghae, that’s called abandonment.” His eyes had dried, and Hyoyeon stood and looked up at the mansion. “We can do this.”
“Well, we can try.”
---
“Oh.” Sungmin said, as the door creaked open. “I’m sorry, but you’re not who we were expecting at all.” The man in the doorway looked at the three of them and smiled. His lack of weaponry now confirmed, Sungmin could see that his leg was in a cast.
“Heechul seems to have forgotten that the doorknob in this suite isn’t working. I’m Jongwoon; I’ll take you to a proper room.” As he hobbled along in front of them, his cast dragged along the floor, making a familiar scraping noise.
“So, how do you know Heechul?” Kyuhyun asked. Hyukjae was in a daze, and Sungmin probably wasn’t all that curious, so it was the only way he was going to find out.
“He’s my cousin. We’re all supposed to be getting this place ready for a family reunion. That didn’t work so well. I fell down the basement steps, and broke my leg. And the other three got a little crazy with the paint in the upstairs bedrooms.”
“Jongwoon!” a much smaller, even less intimidating man appeared behind them. “Heechul needs you to go help him find their friends. He said he saw them running for Youngwoon’s place.”
“He just wants to see if I can break the other leg.” Jongwoon nudged another door open, and waved Ryeowook away. “This is Kibum’s room, so you guys can hang out in here. I have to go.” Sungmin looked into the room, and Kibum waved from the bed.
“Donghae is going to kill you.” Sungmin didn’t sound at all sad, and he latched onto Kyuhyun’s arm. “Why didn’t you tell us your relatives were kind of… odd? We could have saved a lot of trouble.”
“I tried. I even told Donghae, but he wasn’t listening.” Since Donghae never really listened, Sungmin supposed that was an acceptable excuse.
“Oh, look, they have a playstation.”
---
Donghae and Hyoyeon were in the process of sneaking in the back way. They’d walked all the way around the mansion, and discovered a path that they hoped led to a backdoor.
There was another building along the way, and once they were close enough, it was clear that it was a church. Donghae tried to pull Hyoyeon forward, as she tried to pull him back, and they both ended up sprawled across the pavement.
“Well. That’s not something you see every day.”
“Miss, you should probably fix your skirt.” Hyoyeon scrambled to her feet, and adjusted her skirt. Two men had just appeared out of the church, and they seemed to be heading for the mansion. “So, are you alright?”
Donghae nodded, and then remembered that they weren’t supposed to trust anybody. Not even people who went to church.
“You look like you could use some food.” Donghae tried to shake his head, but the guy with the possessed eyebrows was stronger than he was and was practically dragging him up to the mansion. This was not a good sign for their prolonged existence. “I’m Siwon.”
“Hankyung.” said the man escorting Hyoyeon. Well, the good thing was that he wasn’t manhandling her the way Siwon was. Hyukjae would absolutely kill him if he let anything happen to her. “We have some friends here who need some help. They should be serving dinner right about now.”
They walked through a yard overrun by weeds, and cracked statues, and Donghae couldn’t help but wonder how much stress he was expected to take before he just passed out.
“Hey!” that voice was familiar and Donghae remembered the dinner conversation from earlier. “They found the others.” A thin feminine looking man was standing at the backdoor. “Siwon, he’s going to have bruises if you don’t let go of him.” Siwon did as he was told, and released Donghae, just in time to see Sungmin follow the stranger outside.
“You’re okay!” Hyoyeon shouted, ditching Hankyung and running to grab Sungmin’s hands. “Where is Hyukjae?”
“He’s inside, eating. We’re going to stick around and help them out for a while. Seeing as how they’re Kibum’s relatives.” He pulled Donghae aside, while the others went into what he assumed was the dining room. “Don’t forget why we’re here, suffering through all of this. Or we will kill you. Hyukkie and I decided.”
“Why are we here suffering through this again?”
“So that you can get Kibum to admit he wants in your pants. Please keep up. He’s waiting over there. We told him if he moved an inch, we’d throw him off the roof, so he should still be there. Oh, don’t mention anything about axe murderers, okay?”
---
It took less than five minutes for Kibum to get what Donghae was trying to tell him, but over an hour for them to explain why Donghae thought the mansion was some kind of slaughterhouse. Once they’d finished eating, Heechul started ordering them around. Kyuhyun and Sungmin, who had been the ones to volunteer their services, were suspiciously absent, and didn’t turn up until they were ready to leave.
“We’ll come and visit again sometime.” Kibum said, leaning out the window. As they pulled out of the driveway, he turned to face Donghae, and smiled. “Where are we going? Should we maybe set up some guidelines about places we stop?”
“I agree!” Hyoyeon said from the driver’s seat. “No creepy mansions...”
“I think it should be my turn next.” Kyuhyun said. He crossed his arms, and leaned against the window.
“Better add abandoned hospitals.” Sungmin nudged Kyuhyun with his elbow, because the last thing they needed was him pouting all the way to the next stop. “You never know what we might come across.”
“No seriously guys, I think I should get a turn. Kibum got one.”
“Somewhere safe. Somewhere happy. Oh look! An amusement park!” Hyukjae pointed to the left, and Hyoyeon swerved so they wouldn’t miss their exit. They made the exit, but completely missed the sign that read ‘condemned’.
