I wonder whether it would be humanly possible to participate in NaNoWriMo while also trying to survive this first semester of my PhD. Maybe an attempt at a 1/2 novel, i.e. 25,000 words rather than 50,000. Thoughts?

I know several of you like to read and/or write fantasy, so maybe you can give me some advice. Here's my dilemma:

In my NaNoWriMo novel (21,500 words!), some of the characters are magical and some are not. I'm struggling to pick a slang term that the magical ones might use for the non-magical ones in a disdainful or exclusive sense, à la "muggle." ( Read more... )

My pantry and fridge are now fully stocked with:

• Crackers
• Peanut butter (and Nutella, but that was already there)
• Dried cranberries
• Chocolate covered almonds
• Scone-making ingredients

NaNo preparations are in high gear, and one important part of these preparations is grocery shopping. So, I have a very important question:

What kind of snacks should I buy?

I changed my NaNo idea. AGAIN.

Idea #1 involved too much research and was fated to be written with sninkle.
Idea #2 was too serious. I just couldn't bear to spend a WHOLE MONTH thinking about something that was shaping up to be well, not happy.

So enter Idea #3. It's YA. And urban fantasy. Because, to paraphrase sninkle, "I like things that aren't realistic."

I've been sucked into the black hole of the Stephenie Meyer novels. Since phrenk sent them to me two weeks ago, I've read almost three of them. I really have no excuse, and I've been horrifically unproductive on all of my projects (graduate school applications, writing, NaNoWriMo prep) since then, but I can't seem to be worried.
