Is musing about audience development

So my choir, Choristry, put on this awesome concert on the weekend. We had a venue SNAFU and our concert was on at the same time as Gloriana’s, a more established similar choir, as well as 2 other choral concerts and 6 other classical concerts. I was so pleased that my friends made an effort to come. I was responsible for 10 ticket sales (a personal best). And I hope that everyone thought that it was time well spent.
Despite my Herculean effort at flogging tickets and the very approachable repertoire we were performing, the audience numbers were… well let us say, anaemic.

All this has me thinking about “audience development”: finding and retaining an audience. So wise, diverse and interesting LJ friends, I’ll ask you.

What makes or would make you go to a performance of a group such as ours (a 30 voice, auditioned choir)?

What do you expect to pay for tickets?
