Checkin In

Have switched knitting projects temporarily to knit a blanket for the Landreth's baby shower in April. I hate to put down one project unfinished since I think that's just bad policy in general. I'm really excited about making my very first gift for a baby, however, rather than just drawing on my mother's talent or from her stash. The project is ( Read more... )

In Texas you don't have to register with a party, you just vote. If you vote in one party's primary, they stamp your voter registration card with the party, so that you can't turn around and vote in the other party's primary. If there are primary run-offs, you're also restricted to voting only in the run-off for the party whose initial primary got your vote. But the next year, you can turn around and vote in a different primary and it's no big deal ( ... )

Yes. That, tho I'd've had less detail about Texas in particular. ;)

When you vote at a primary, usually what you can do is check out -- not normally necessary, but is for this purpose -- and tell the nice little old ladies that you are changing your registration back to "undeclared" or whatever it is they happen to call it. Otherwise you will automatically be considered enrolled in the party of the primary you voted in. Either way, you can only vote in the one primary.

Not that I am obsessive about remaining unaffiliated. Certainly not, ha! ("Cool Moose" might've looked pretty nifty tho, eh?)

Republicans in Spaaaace... oh no, wait... in Teeeeexas! traceroo March 3 2010, 23:13:49 UTC
Agreed: Rick Perry can bite me, too!

It's very unlikely that we'll still be living in Texas for very long. Every state does their voter registration and handles the party primaries differently (which I find to be highly annoying, but that's another story). So the issues on my mind in general.

I can see why you'd want to get some reasonable Republicans in power against the alternatives listed. I just can't bring myself to comment on any of the assorted issues, or I'll end up using characters like @#&! a lot. ;)

The Green Party??!!! gingererer March 3 2010, 22:03:15 UTC
The Green Party nominated Cynthia McKinney for President. The woman was a disgrace to Congress, and that's saying a lot.

It is indeed saying much since that constitutes about 90% of the political opinions I've ever heard you express! (The other 10% are in favor of states' rights).

If the Green Party is out, which do you recommend I check out?

(Becca's home) Two options. One more Machiavellian than the other. One, stay Democrat, and vote for the least evil. That's the route I'm clinging to, despite my overwhelming disappointment with their award winning failure to capitalize on having control of the congress and a mandate to Make Shit Happen. Two, register republican and vote in primaries for the most fundamentalist, or least electable option, poisoning that parties chance of electing someone who will win the popular vote ( ... )

There's also the option in Texas of voting in Republican primaries because in most of the state, that's the only vote that's going to matter. Many races don't even have a Democrat running, because it's so pointless. So if you want to have your say at all in who's going to be running your city/county/etc. you have to vote Republican in March and figure you'll be irrelevant in November.

Part of what I love about Austin (compared to Houston, which is where I'm from) is that I get to vote for people who I actually WANT to vote for instead of choosing the least repugnant Republican (this primary notwithstanding).

Strangely enough, it didn't occur to me for a second that you might register Republican. ;)

Sometimes people forget there are more than two choices... maybe not more than two realistic choices, but there are more! ;)
