Year of Better may become Year of Consumption

Officially, 2005 was the Year of the New Age for me. In practice, it largely turned out to be the Year of Embracing My Inner Geek. New Age/Old Age - In many ways it always feels "new" to be comfortable in your own skin. In this case, it just happened to be my own geeky skin.

I have early predictions that 2006, the so-called Year of Better may turn out to be the Year of Consumption for me. It certainly already feels like the Year of the Consumer if nothing else!

We both try to live without clutter - and that's a good thing. Judging by the amount of clutter in which we actually live, I can't imagine if we didn't try to make it otherwise! I did a full clean sweep of the apartment in December when I took a week off for Christmas. We did another mindful clean sweep as we packed for the move. Yet somehow, there's still more junk! We're still throwing stuff away. Things come out of boxes, and I wonder why they ever went into boxes. Then there's more subtle choices: When was the last time I wore this color of nail polish? I hate the second Planet of the Apes movie! So what if it came with a set? I'm never, ever going to watch this movie again. (Ever.)

I'm not moving this stuff again. If all goes according to plan and we do a cross-country move next year, I'm definitely not moving this stuff. They charge by weight when you move across country. Those three ounces of nail polish count!

Here's the quandary: How can I employ a system to measure how often I use things? In specific, I'm wondering about media, fashion accessories, odd kitchen bits, books. Maybe I could use dot stickers or something? But would I mark when used, or remove marks when used? I have no idea how to measure this.

There are books on my shelves I haven't cracked in five years - and that's after three clean sweeps of the shelves. I bought my dictionary as a gift for myself when I graduated from high school in 1988. I think I've used it twice in the past five years. And it's heavy.

Anything that can be consumed will be consumed this year! Two bottles of my favorite perfume, both of which purchased in 2002? Two bottles enter, one bottle leaves! Five tubes of body glitter ("ass dust" to you and me) which I wear only once every six months lately? I'm gonna be a glittering fool this year! Twelve bottles of nail polish which are mostly the same shades of toenail red and hot pink that I keep buying over and over? Nope. I will keep six at the most (toenail red, Coca-Cola deep red, hot pink, light pink, silver/platinum, and purply - in case you care). These things have gotta go.

So in the "mortal" words - IT HAS BEGUN!

Let the Year of Consumption commence!
