As you all know, I'm a huge fan of webcomics. On my Del.icio.us page, I have 50 now that I read every day.

However, I have a certain dislike for traditional comic books. I enjoy the movies as movies, but I can't understand why anyone can put up with the shit they call comics.
Reading through the Wikipedia Article on Magneto, for example, reveals

I agree with almost every single point you made. But then there are newer comics that, in my opinion, are breaking the mold. Rising Stars and Supreme Powers are two such graphic novels. Both take the typical superpowered setting and transfer them over to the supposed "real world". They do explore the very commmon ironies of most comics but they often address the issues not usually taken with normal comics. Such as government involvment with super powered beings.
So while I, for one, love superpowered comics because of my love of the concept of people with powers (duh), I must say that comic writers should have taken a more stream lined approach when first starting these comics. One single coherent timeline with no discontinualities (??) would be an enjoyable read, even if their powers are the a-typical flight and super strength.

P.S. For those of you who havent heard of it or seen it. I recomend watching Heros on nbc Monday nights at 8. There have only been two episodes so far and I am enjoying what I see.

While I agree that Rising Stars and Supreme Powers are very good at what they are, it still doesn't change the fact that the very premise of superheroes gets absurd. Look at the Batman movies. The first one (and Batman: Begins) are both excellent films, but at time progressed they became more and more campy, until the travesty that is 'Batman and Robin' got produced.

It's the same way with the comic industry. On the 'Crisis of Infinite Worlds' link, it mentions that it had to happen due to 50 years of piss-poor management and nonexistant continuity. Even then, only a few short years later they had to do it again.
Yes, I understand some/most of it has to due with the differing lines being produced by different authors.
But come on. Make up your own superhero.

Superman is dead.
