That's something Dr. Gwozdz and I have talked about for the last few years, and something I agree with totally. Set your goal to be a completely musical performance, and the rest will fall into place. Granted, there needs to be some fundamental technique involved, and any extended techniques should be practiced in order to master them. If someone says they don't have the technique to be musical, what they're really saying is they either don't have the desire to put forth the effort to play expressively, or they don't have the ear to be musical.
Hmmm...I like that comment. I mean let's face it. Technique is a necessity, but technique can also be demonstrated by listening to a MIDI file. It takes heart, soul, and emotion to be musical and the more that you can bring those 3 things into a piece the more musical and expressive it will be. Musicality is what brings tears to your eyes and an audience to its feet.
