This was the day of my audition, I wasn't even accepted to the school yet. I honestly don't see the point. And if they can justify a reason, why did they make it so hard? My theory knowledge shouldn't determine entrance into a performance oriented doctorate program.
"My theory knowledge shouldn't determine entrance into a performance oriented doctorate program."
I disagree. Skills like harmonic dictation and simple figured bass realization really demonstrate basic assets needed to be a high-level musician. Especially at the doctoral level.
Ask Charles Rosen.
As a matter of fact, I'd argue that if you want a degree in performance your dictation skills should be BETTER than usual.
I'm don't mind figured bass. As a performer, I'll run into that if I play older music that uses the practice. But, I don't see a time where I'll be forced to take musical dictation.
I think it is helpful and makes you a better musician, it develops your ear to recognize things. But last time I checked, I didn't play a passage any differently if I knew it was a ii-V-I cadence, or whatever progression...
99% of the time I have music in front of me and access to all parts, or a score. :)
*shrugs* the theory and such parts would be breezey for me, it's the "here, we are going to play snippets of 28 pieces and see if you can name them all" that would get me...I have musical ADD and am AWFUL at literature...I have to work really hard at it...
