During my audition for the University of Michigan I had to take a "Theory Placement test"
This test was one page. 4 staff systems on just the front of the paper. 2 parts to the test. The first part was harmonic dictation. I was expected to write down the soprano and bass parts that were being played (in the rhythm) and provide a roman numeral analysis of what was being "dictated".
Part 2 was a figured bass realisation. I had to realize the figured bass then provide a roman numeral analysis.
Thomas gave it an ole' "college try" on the first playing of the dictation portion, but I then decided that my time would be better spent on getting the figured bass stuff right. I haven't done dictation in around 5 years, and even then I think I cheated (it was computer based).
I don't know if it was too much of them to ask me that stuff, but who knows. Everyone in the room kind of laughed when we figured out it was dictation...
