Trivial Dispute (961:39)

May 23, 2010 21:40

Sam and I had a weekend away this weekend. We were playing Trivial Pursuit RPM over a Makers in a bed and breakfast in the Blue Mountains after dinner last night, and she was behind by miles when she got the question "How many reels of tape does a 24 track record on at once ( Read more... )

Sam is totally right, regardless if the cards are over twenty years old or not.

a) there ARE in fact still artists / studios still making occasional use of 24-track analog decks as their recording platform. (the 24-track digital ones, on the other hand, are pretty much all retired. there's masochism for art, and then there's just outright stupidity.)

b) no musician i'm aware of refers to an audio interface / Pro Tools setup as a "24-track" or "24-channel" or anything else. you might have an interface or interface bank with 24 input channels. but that's just the interface.

wondering, would you have similar issues with someone for citing that Polaroid film takes a minute or so to develop, just because your Android phone shows the results off its CCD instantly on the touchscreen?

(in your defense, though, "24-track" in the old analog domain is somewhat misleading too. you could get 24 tracks of input / recording from three synced 8-track decks, although by 1986 that would have been a pretty ghetto-rigged, strickly-4-da-garage

(deep breath)

1. IT IS A TRICK QUESTION THAT IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE YOU GO "24 TRACKS LET'S SEE HOW MANY REELS DIVIDE THAT BY A FOUR TRACK LEAVES SIX UHHHH UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH UH UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" AND IF YOUR HEAD EXPLODES WITH DARK FOREBODINGS TOO, I'LL SEE YOU ON THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, AND YOU REALISE THE ANSWER IS ONE.

2. 1986 CARDS HAVE 1986 ANSWERS. THERE IS NO FACILITY FOR UPDATING THEM OR LEAVING FEEDBACK. YOU HAVE TO GIVE 1986 ANSWERS. A++++++++ WILL ANSWER AGAIN.

3. I EXPECTED MORE FROM YOU. WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT PRO TOOLS. IT'S A TRICK 1986 QUESTION.

4. AAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

i was hearing this morning about these fucking Australian spiders with half-inch long fangs that drive you insane inside of 15 minutes when they bite. you might want to check your underwear area.

I only have one half-inch long fang in my underwear area, and it hasn't driven me insane but I have gone blind and hairy palmed ever since I found these cheesecake Joan Collins photos.

also this is only a trick question for the layman. a musician of 1986 would know "24 track" referred to a 2", open-reel tape-based device found in any studio worth its salt. anybody else would be like "WELL 24 DURRRR" or maybe "12 DURRRR" if they somehow managed to make the cognitive connection between standard consumer cassettes and stereo presentation.

and if you pointed at a computer recording platform in a 2010 recording studio and called it a "24 track," they'd assume you'd fallen into some kind of Rip van Winkle spell about the same time that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out.

If they have capital punishment over there for over-analysing a non-issue to death, you better start putting together the menu for your last meal, brother.
