Feminism...woooah baby is that a great, loaded, topic. I can't stand the word or the hard core concepts behind it at all and yet I am all for gender equality to a degree, which is why I don't buy into Feminism at all. Besides, Femi-nazi's scare me.
And that's pretty much what I'll be talking about, with the addition that feminism shouldn't be treated like a dirty word. I consider myself a feminist, but I think you and I can both agree I'm not the angry, all-things-phallic-must-die sort of person. And I know for a fact that the majority of women I know who identify themselves as being a feminist certainly don't think that as well.
I think that feminism shouldn't be defined by its radicals, much the same as religion and politics shouldn'e be defined by theirs. it's a social movement, which means it's gonna attract its fair share of crazies, nut jobs, and the like. But, just like every other social movement, feminism is more, to me, something that's personally defined.
So... yeah. I totally agree with you on the crazies, but I think it's kind of a disservice to the women who DID struggle and fight and actually suffer to gain us any sort of equal rights to say you can't stand the word feminist. Hate the crazies, by all means, because lord knows I do. They're a major reason why a lot of people sneer at the term feminist. I see some of them and I'm like, "... really?" To them, I'm probably the most awful feminist out there -- but at least I'm (mostly) sane and rational.
And absolute word on the pit bulls, by the way. For part of the presentation, I looked up videos and photos from dog fights. *shudders* It was horrible. I spent like twenty minutes crying afterward because of what was done to those poor dogs. Makes me freakin' sick.
Ooooh, you WOULD be an interesting case study on nature v. nurture. Hmm... *ponders* If I go into psychology, that'd probably be my thesis project right there. Study the nature v. nurture aspects of adopted children. That could be a lot of fun! Originally (yes, I'm thinking this far ahead) I'd planned on doing something involving dissociative identity disorder because THAT absolutely fascinates me. But so does nature v. nurture.
OH SNAP! I am SO thrilled your business is taking off! Where do you have it set up now? Like, what events? I could check with my friend omizu to see if there's anything coming up Ren Faire wise in the area here. *is totally not suggesting that to kidnap you*
For me, well. I have to get tested for a form of thyroid cancer. Luckily it's a curable, localized one so that's good. Supposedly if it comes back positive it'll cure me of my fatigue, kidney stones, aches, etc.
Uuuuhhh... keep me posted on this. Like, emails. Private messages. Hell, I'm gonna send you my cell phone and you can text/call me with updates. I know you said it's curable, but still... *hugs* Good luck on this.
