Materia? What's that?

Ah... Materia is crystalized mako energy I think. It calls upon the power of the Ancients and it manipulates nature, but it's just magic to me.

[grins] I guess since I had to explain it, I'll assume there was no materia involved?

Huh. Sounds interesting!

[nods] That's right; what I did just now is called an alchemic transmutation, a scientific process of changing the composition of an object from one thing to another.

[stepping out of the bathhouse, with a towel wrapped around him, when he sees the glow of alchemic light]

[turns around, surprised]

[sees the towel around Al's waist]

Oh! This is your floor, then?

[nods, flushing just a tiny bit]

Yep! Did you not get a room yet, Brother?

Nope, not yet. Guess I'll be sleeping in the hall tonight!

No, that was alchemy. I'm fine.

Alchemy? What's that?

It's the science of reconstructing an object's basic elemental components into something different! It's...more complicated than just that, but in short, that is the main purpose of alchemy.

Hmm?

Oh, this is alchemy!

What do you mean "alchemy"?! That's not possible!

"Not possible"? Well, maybe not where you're from, but in Amestris, alchemy has been the main source of progress for the past couple centuries. Actually, I happen to be a professional alchemist working for my country's military, so I know a lot about the science, if you're interested.
