My desk sits right next to the owners office, which is nice, as it gives me an idea of what's going on. It can also be a little disturbing, as it has been during the past week or so. The owners have had behind-closed-door meetings with some of the staff, one at a time. Now and then it's been a little on the loud side in there, but all I can hear is the odd word, which just makes me more curious. So me and coworker A are having lunch, talking in hushed voices about this, wondering what's going on, when one of the owners ask us to sign a card. "
"Sure. Whose birthday is it?"
"It's not a birthday. It's for coworker B's going away party."
"Uh. Oh. When is that?"
"In an hour. There will be cake."
So apparently they figured there wasn't enough work to go around, so someone had to go. This would, in any setting, be at least a little alarming. In a company with 15 employees it's kind of a big deal. And if you happen to be the guy in the brand new position that the owner was hoping would really start new and exciting things, but then withdrew all resources except the actual salary for when it turned out that the economy didn't just bounce back up to -99 levels when the war ended... Well, then it's rather disturbing. Add to this the unexplained delaying of my purchase of a computer at personnel discount pricing, and it makes for a memorial day weekend with a less than great forecast for good sleep.
I don't like it when stuff sucks.
Oh well. It's not like we'll be starving in the streets, even if this job should go up in smoke. We've got one pretty stable and expansible income, plus the web design thing that might just do rather well for itself if it got some attention, and of course, one of these days I'm bound to become the most renowned luthier in the world, even if I might need to streamline my production a little. If I sold the ones I'm building now for $1,000 a piece, I'd be making about $2.50 an hour.
Anyway. Time to get something done here, I guess.
Anyone need an alliance manager?
