Summary: Kurt gets tackled during football practice.
A/N: yet another prompt! This one is for rei17 over at Glee Fluff Meme who wanted Kurt to get hurt during football practice, it also features Puck and Finn.

Puck really shouldn’t be surprised, though he and Finn had done what they could to make the other members of the football team lay off Kurt and the other Glee club members, Kurt would always be a target. This however, this was not throwing him in a dumpster or throwing a slushie on him, this was trying to seriously hurt him. He and Finn had managed to keep the more aggressive members of the team off their kicker for most of the practice, because really what use was it to have Kurt tackled by people twice his size? He was the kicker for god’s sake. So when Dave Karofsky saw the open opportunity he took it. He managed to evade both Puck and Finn and slam into Kurt hard enough that his helmet bounced off.

There’s an audible crunching sound and Kurt isn’t getting up.

It’s still a grand total of ten seconds before Finn’s running across the field towards Kurt’s crumpled form and Puck’s wailing on Karofsky. Because yeah, Kurt wasn‘t his favorite person in the world, but he hadn‘t deserved that, and he wouldn‘t be coming back from that anytime soon. It takes Mike, Matt, and a third player that Puck couldn’t identify to yank him off and he almost wiggles free twice before they pull him away. He shrugs them off and turns to see Coach and Finn trying to help as Kurt begins to get up. From the way Kurt’s moving he’s gonna be hurting for a while. Tanaka’s hands are on his neck, but he seems to think there’s no immediate threat because his hands move after a few moments.

What worries Puck the most though is that Kurt hasn’t made a sound. He should be shrieking and carrying on, but he’s not even crying. His face is sort of gray, and by the way he’s holding his left arm, Puck’s pretty sure it’s broken, but Kurt’s not actually saying anything about any of it. When Tanaka and Finn get him on his feet, Kurt tilts, unable to maintain weight on his right foot, and Finn is suddenly holding him rather protectively against his chest. Puck wants to go back to pounding on Karofsky, but instead he moves across the field towards Finn and Kurt to see if there’s anything he can do to help.

When he gets closer he realizes what he thought was dirt was actually blood in Kurt’s hair. Just how hard had he been hit? Tanaka is speaking to him in soft reassuring tones, which is frankly kinda weird. Kurt’s eyes don’t quite seem to be in focus either, which Puck thinks is probably pointing to a concussion. Kurt’s eyelids flutter slightly and Puck recalls rather quickly that you shouldn’t let people with a concussion fall asleep.

“Hummel, don’t you fall asleep.” Puck orders, harsher than he intended, but Kurt’s eyes snap back open and he fixes a rather bleary look on Puck before nodding very slightly. Tanaka has the first aid kit out and he’s patching Kurt up the best he can on the field before telling them Kurt he should go down to the nurse and have them call his father.

“Uh, coach I don’t think Kurt’s walking anywhere…” Finn trails off glancing down at the smaller boy and Puck heaves a sigh.

“Oh hell, he’s what like twenty pounds, I’ll just carry him.” Puck says and as a testament to how out of it and how much pain Kurt really was in, he didn’t protest. It took a few moments for them to get situated, but once Finn had helped get Kurt in Puck’s arms, Puck began to move. It’s then Kurt makes the first noise he’s made since he got hit.

It’s this tiny little sound of pain that has Puck feeling awful for anything he might have ever done in the past to make that noise escape Kurt and Finn’s looking at him in concern. It’s quite for a moment before Finn shakes it off and takes off ahead to open any doors they might come across once their inside the school. Puck goes as fast as he dares with his cargo, and he glances down once to see Kurt’s eyes shut. They haven’t drifted shut into unconsciousness however, they squeezed tightly shut and Puck can see tears brimming under Kurt’s eyelashes.

It occurs to Puck quicker than he would like, that every step he’s taking is causing Kurt pain and all he really wants is to get to the nurses office, and stop hurting the other boy. It dawns on him just how light Kurt is around then, and he tries to shift him into a slightly more comfortable position as they pass through the doors into the school. Finn’s casting worried looks over at Kurt, who still hasn’t actually said anything yet, but his breathing is weird, all hitched and tight like he can’t breathe. And then Puck brings in a sharp breathe of his own.

“Your ribs,” Puck stated, “Do they hurt?” Kurt gave that minuscule nod again and Puck grimaces because he knows broken ribs hurt like a bitch and there isn’t a whole ton they can do for them. He also knows that broken ribs can have complications and now he’s afraid he’s going to drive Kurt’s rib into his lung if he moves the wrong way. It didn’t seem like the nurses office was ever this far away before. It feels like an eternity before Puck’s finally able to set Kurt down on one of the hard clinic beds and he when the nurse disappears out the door to find Kurt’s emergency contact form and Finn dodges back out to retrieve Kurt’s bag, Puck finds that he can’t just leave Kurt lying there alone.

He looks so damn small.

“I’m sorry.” He says finally because he really can’t stand the silence. Kurt turns his head slightly to see him and raises an eyebrow is response and Puck can’t seem to stop the verbal diarrhea that commences. “I’m sorry for a lot of things. I’m sorry for dumping you in the trash and slushing you, and that I’ve made your life hell for years. We’re teammates now, on football and in glee, and we should stick together. If we had been paying closer attention to you instead of the play I could have stopped Karofsky before he tackled you. If I had any inkling he was going to do that, the bastard-” He’s cut off by Kurt.

“Don’t be an idiot.” His voice sounds…weird. It’s all thick and harsh and clogged and Puck can hear the tears in it, even though Kurt isn’t crying, at least not yet. “It was only a matter of time before someone did that, I do appreciate what you and Finn have tried to do for me, but you couldn’t be there all the time. And I appreciate your apologizes.” His voice fades out, he looks winded and silence reigns for a few moments. Puck shifts uncomfortable, before taking the seat nearest the bed.

“You do realize I should be trying to make you feel better.” Puck finally says, and he sounds so put out that Kurt can’t help the grin that cracks open the split in his lip. He winces slightly and Puck wants to reach forward and pat his hand or arm in reassurance, but he isn’t sure if there’s a single piece of Kurt that isn’t throbbing right now. They settle back into silence in which Puck squirms around a lot and Kurt seems to be drawing in short shallow breathes that worry him slightly. He’s about to start talking again with Finn reappears followed by the nurse and a man who looks like a trucker. It takes him a few moments to realize that holy shit, that’s Kurt’s dad. His face looked a little grim, and he frowned when he saw the condition of his son.

“I’m ok.” Kurt says before his father can speak.

“No he’s not.” Puck corrected, and then flinched under the man’s stare. Burt Hummel was an intimidating man, and it was weird to see the two together, they were so different. When Burt got to his son, all traces of sternness left his face and he gently helped ease his son upright. Being careful not to jostle him and supporting his back with his arm.

“I’d say he’s right Kurt, I think a trip to the hospital is in order.” Burt informs his son, and Kurt doesn’t even have the energy to protest. He just nods wearily, which sets Burt’s face back into stern, concerned lines. Finn joins Puck off to the side and the pair watch as the elder Hummel gently lead his son out of the school, barely acknowledging the other two boys as he left.

“I think I’m going to go have a little talk with Karofsky about teamwork.” Puck says finally and he’s gone before Finn can say anything. Little did Puck know Finn was thinking along those same lines, and followed him out to assist in the ‘chat‘.
