Summary: Spring is in the air, and so is the pollen.
It was finally spring! The flowers were in bloom, there were bunnies and ducklings, and all sorts of cute baby animals everywhere. And Kurt Hummel kind of hated it.
He had nothing against bunnies or ducks or flowers, but it was the allergies that accompanied all these things that he hated. Every spring Kurt felt like his sinuses were trying to break his face open. No matter how many times he went to the doctors they could never seem to figure out the right dose or medication to make spring time any easier on him. So he hacked and sneezed his way through what is supposed to be the prettiest time of year.
It made school even more unbearable than it usually was. He had just shut his locker when he came face to face with Finn and Rachel, both looking particularly worried. He took a startled step back when Rachel threw her arms around him in a bone crushing hug, mumbling about how they had just heard. To bad Kurt had no idea what the hell she was talking about.
“What?” He asked, bringing up his handkerchief to cover his nose, he may not like Rachel much, but he didn’t really want to drip snot all over her sweater either.
“About what happened in third.” Rachel said, as if that explained everything. It didn’t.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Kurt said and glanced at Finn to help, which thinking back might not have be wise, because Finn did tend to just blurt things out sometimes. Now was no exception.
“That you were crying in third, because you missed your mom. It’s ok man.” Finn told him with a smile, and Kurt was pretty sure the headache he was starting to get wasn‘t from his allergies.
“I was not crying in third period.” Kurt said rolling his eyes, but the fact his eyes were red rimmed and his nose was red and raw probably wasn’t helping his case.
“It’s ok to miss her.” Rachel said. “She passed away this time of year then?”
“No. Guys, it’s allergies, my mom died in November, it’s April.” But it was becoming clear they weren’t really listening, as Rachel almost immediately launched into a tirade about how they all needed to be able to trust in one another when things got bad. Then she looked like she might hug him again, and Kurt knew he needed to get out, needed to get out of the danger zone right now!
“Oh there’s Artie, got to go!” Kurt practically sprinted down the hall to meet up with the other boy.
Turns out Artie was not much help, because when Kurt related the story, he thought it was hysterical and he laughed until he cried. Kurt quickly veered off in search of someone who hadn’t lost their mind. So far he had been unsuccessful and been sidelined by Ms. Pillsbury and Mr. Schue both in turn with offers to talk if he needed it. He avoided the rest of the glee club like the plague. If Rachel and Finn had already talked to them it was only a matter of time before someone tried to talk to him again.
Strangely enough it wasn’t until he ducked into the boy’s bathroom to evade Rachel that he found someone in a similar state. Noah Puckerman looked like he wanted nothing more than to punch his nose right off his face.
“Allergies?” Kurt questioned and Puck nodded. The two had been on much better terms recently the tentative truce they had slowly becoming something more like an almost-friendship.
“Pollen sucks. People thought I was crying in class because of Quinn or something. I’m a stud, I don’t cry.”
“Agreed, pollen sucks. Also, welcome to the club. I was crying about my mother apparently. Rachel and Finn take rumors to literally.”
“Lame dude.” Puck said making a face and glancing over at Kurt.
“Yeah.” Kurt agreed, before coughing rather viciously into the handkerchief he never let go off. Puck slid down the wall before patting the floor next to him.
“Well make yourself at home; we might as well be miserable together.”
For a moment Kurt thought about turning him down, because this was the boy’s bathroom and it was disgusting. But at the moment miserable, understanding, companionship sounded way better than braving the halls again, so Kurt slid down the hall to sit across from the larger boy.
“You do realize this could start a whole new rumor.” Kurt said after a moment and Puck shrugged before wiping his nose with the back of his hand. Kurt passed him a clean tissue, because yeah that’s disgusting!
“Let them talk.” Puck said and Kurt decided not to press that, considering Puck had been upset people thought he was crying. Instead the two spent the time talking about whatever came to mind, and really for a little while, Kurt didn’t feel quite so terrible. The final bell rang and Kurt heaved himself upright, he was for once grateful there was no glee today.
“Hummel, what are you doing after school?”
“Just going home and crash.” Kurt replied, before Puck gestured towards the door.
“You should come over. My mom makes this soup that will clear your sinuses, for at least a couple minutes.” And then Puck grinned, and Kurt had to admit, that did sound better than going home and having his father hover over him for a while.
“Yeah ok, thanks.” Puck grinned again, before placing a had on Kurt’s shoulder and steering him out into the halls.
Kurt Hummel hated spring, but at least he had someone to hate it with now.
