I love everything about this. It's just so quiet (which is so them).

The difference in my mind between Alaric/Elena and Elijah/Elena is simple: Alaric/Elena scorch everything, it's basically impossible to ignore. Elijah/Elena smolder; everything could be burned before anyone realizes it.

I am fascinated by the Grayson/John dynamic as well because, in my mind, they were a lot like Stefan and Damon. Grayson was the "good" brother and John was the "bad" brother, and, just from some of the stuff John referenced, I always got the feeling there was some resentment towards Grayson.
