Sometimes life just ain't very damn fair

So yeah I'm a still a fairly new LJ user and I've already become a slacker. Well thats partially because the last couple of days have been pretty boring really. However, that wasn't the case tonight.

I decided to go to the Replay to have a couple of beers and just be out of my apartment for a while. Since the Replay Lounge is the best hangout bar in Lawrence, it typically win's out for my patronage nine times out of ten.

I walk in the front door and I see my new good friends Matt and Matt sitting at the bar. They both look pretty sad and I ask them what's wrong. If you have read the paper or seen the local news in the last couple of days you know that there was a horrible car accident on Highway 40 on Monday night that resulted in a couple of people being killed. Well it turns out that one of the people involved was a good friend to several people that hang out or work at the Replay who also happen to be good friends of mine. This person was also a good friend of Chuck Newman who is a DJ at the Lazer and is also a good friend of mine.

What make's this kind of a bummer for me is that I drive Highway 40 all the time to go to my parents house and even did so last night. I also will be doing so this Saturday morning. I know it's not a very safe route to take, but I do it anyway. Half the time I'm driving way too fast for no real reason other then just to do it. Will any of this stop me? Sadly, probably not.

It was also a bummer to hear about this because the person that my friends knew had just graduated from KU and was just starting to get settled with his life. He had a GF and their relationship was starting to get pretty serious. Basically he had his whole life in front of him until it came to a sudden crashing halt on Monday night. Sometimes life just ain't very damn fair I tell ya.

So what was gonna be a mellow night of some casual conversation and a little drinkin' became much more then that. I had to play the role of the good friend and just let people grieve soome. That was fine by me because these guys are good people and I suspect they would do the same for me if need be. Thank goodness we decided to call it an early night though since I have to get up at 6:00am. One of the Matt's left about 10 minutes before me and the other Matt did. He just needed some alone time to clear his head and decided to walk home. I can't say I blame him. Since they live about 30 seconds from my apartment I gave the other Matt a ride home. Hopefully they will both be alright and may their good friend R. I. P.

The funeral is on Saturday morning. We plan on getting all of us together at the Replay on Saturday night to get piss drunk in this persons honor. I figure it's probably the best thing for everyone involved.

It's times like these that I consider myself very lucky and thankful for what I have. Stuff like this kind of puts everything in perspective really.
