Baby on Board...How I've Adored

My weekend was front-loaded with a lot of social activities Friday night and Saturday afternoon. So now I'm just staying in for the rest of the night.

Last night I went to dinner with No Kidding at Big Ben, a new British-themed pub/restaurant. It was pretty fun, and the food was good. I had fish and chips. While I was there, a friend of mine called to ask if I'd gotten her other messages (which I had, but didn't actually listen to) about meeting up with some people at WineUp. So I went over there after dinner. It was a jazz/poetry performance, which was cool. I checked out some potential performers for PrideCharlotte, which I will pass along to the guy who's heading up Entertainment. I ran into some people I know, and also met Tonya Jameson from the Charlotte Observer. I'd only ever seen her in the little picture next to her columns, which is about the size of a LJ icon, if not smaller. I expected her to be a lot taller, for some reason. But she seems cool, and she could be a good contact to have for Pride. A funny thing happened there. This event attracted a predominantly African-American crowd, so I was one of the few white people there. I introduced myself to one of the performers and said "Hi, I'm Toryn, I'm with PrideCharlotte. Not Black Gay Pride, but the other one." The guy looked at me, smiled, and said "Yeah, I could have figured you're not with Black Pride." It reminded me of something out of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I ended up staying out until about 1 AM, which was unexpected.

Today was Jamie(from work)'s baby shower, held at the home of another co-worker. It actually ended up being more fun than I expected. It was mostly co-workers (although not everyone from work was invited), plus two of Jamie's friends from the real world. It wasn't a huge group, so the gift-opening didn't feel endless, like it sometimes does at things like that. I sat next to Sam, and she's a lot of fun. We also played a cool game. When I hear "baby shower game," I think of things like "guess the the type of baby food in the jar," so it's generally not something to get too excited about. At the beginning of the shower, Sarah (the hostess) handed each of us 3 clothespins. She explained that from that point on, nobody was allowed to say "the B word." If you did, you'd have to give a clothespin to whoever caught you. So I caught someone saying "baby-sitting" and then Sam asked Sarah "where are your babies?"(referring to her dogs). I had built up a comfortable cushion of 7 or 8 pins before I got caught saying it. I ended up winning with 10 pins. If I ever host a baby shower I'll have to remember that one. I got Jamie a bunch of little things from BabiesRUs, a bib, wipes, etc, plus I made her a CD, which I called The Baby on Board Collection. It's a Simpsons reference of course, and I used a picture of Maggie for the cover. I am listening to the playlist now. It has some baby-themed songs (such as "Stay Up Late" by the Talking Heads), some comedy stuff (like Bill Cosby's classic routine about kids and brain damage) and a bunch of other songs that I just like!

In house news: The sellers accepted the offer, so I have put in the deposit. Now it's onto all the paperwork, mortgage details, inspections, etc. I am aiming to close May 25th or so, and move that weekend. So far I've been given no reason to think that's not reasonable. Which is good, because I need to give my 30-day notice for the apartment on Monday. I am purge mode now, trying to find whatever stuff around here I can give away, throw away or sell. I still have so much extraneous shit I just can never seem to part with. It just gets moved from place to place to place every time and a lot of it never even gets unpacked.

house, food, pride, no kidding, work
