I think it works like if you were shitty to someone in a past life and you never reconcile with them in that lifetime then yeah, you owe them. You just have to suck it up and let them be shitty to you. Of course if this is the case, then in their next lifetime that behavior may cost them.

Haha, I appreciate that, but believe it or not I actually have increased my skill level for this!...Sometimes it makes me sad at how good I am at deception...but it's a useful trait in our society.
