Here is a recap of recording:
Elephant Gun recorded another album at Todd's place with Joe G at the healm. It has ten tracks... and I think has an entirely different feel from the last one... it's a little more somber, but it never gets to the point of depressing... it's just a bit darker than the last one.
I am still amazed that we were able to record a full length with as many tracks (I think 65 per song) in 3 days, especially when hearing about how other people take weeks or even months to record albums and those albums contain far less instruments. Recording the manner in which we do has its pros and cons, although generally I think the pro's outweigh the cons. Being forced to record so much in such a short time ensures not only a more organic feel, but forces everyone to be around for most of it... which in our case includes a lot of eating, drinking and ridiculousness. I know I sure had a good time.
One problem with having 8+ people working on an album is conflicting views on things such as tracklisting and coming to a concensus on an album title. The tracklisting is one of the things I take most seriously. For KP I worked really hard to find a tracklisting that made it sound conhesive and not a collection of songs. The final order, in my opinion, was the only one that worked... and I wasn't even completely happy with it, if it were up to me 2 songs should have been axed.
This time around there are 10 very different sounding songs and putting them in order is going to be near impossible. I am not quite sure if I am going to be able to get away with what I did last time, which was to basically decide the order, cover art and album title with little protesting from the rest of the band... it will most likely be more of a democratic process than a coup this time around... I think everyone has caught onto my persistant ways...
Many titles have been thrown around, my favorite at the moment is "Oh the places we will eat..." The cover floating around my head is a bold and colorful illustration of a chicago style dog with all the toppings overflowing. Yum. I don't think anyone is going to go for that....
ramble ramble ramble ramble
(it's coming out in late May... that's 2 full lengths in under a year... woo hoo!)
