ARGH!! God, sometimes I wonder about my parents, I really do. Every bloody time Uncle Dale says he can fix something computer-related, they believe him! Despite all the past evidence to the contrairy. The last time I let him touch MY computer, it took me three weeks to un-do all the shit he did and get Daemon working properly again.
So when Dale finds out that Mom's computer wont go on-line here anymore (but will other places like work), and our DSL won't plug into any other outlet in the house but the one on my far wall and we don't want it there anymore, leaving my laptop as the only computer that's able to connect now, what does he do? He just says "That's not right, I'll fix it..."
And what do my parents do, despite my telling them repetedly over the years that Dale dosn't actualy know what he's talking about, he really fucking dosent, and I don't want to fix his mistakes anymore once he leaves?
Yah, I think you all see where this is going. ::headesk::
My schedual is flipped pretty oddly right now, I'm awake basicly 3am to 4pm/5pm. So I missed the conversation where they desided to let him fix it right after breakfast Sunday morning. We all went out (with the boys, but that's a whole other rant) to Wagners (best bakery in town) and had food, and then when we came back, Dale imideatly went down to my room and started unplugging shit! No by-your-leave, not so much of a "hay, can I come in?" ::banging head::
Long story short? He's a fucking idiot, we ended up without any fucking inernet connection. In the end? He orders us to tell Qwest to come out and fix it...not because he couldn'd do it or because he fucked it up worse, but because he had to leave to Go To The Seahawks Game! ::Head Pound::Head Pound::Head Pound::
So I had to wait around 36 hours or so for a Qwest guy to come out and hook up our Internet again. Which is what I've been telling Dad to do for three fucking weeks now. But does he listen to me? Of course not. He waits until Dale leaves us no fucking choice at all about it. ::groans:: And he wouldn't even listen to me when I told him it'd be free, he had already payed for coverage for them to come back if we need shit fixed with Qwest. He kept insisting it'd cost him at least a hundred dollers. Well guess what? I was right about that too! ::sighs::
Okay, so basic update on the net situation, then. TechGuy!Mike came out today, which was incredibly wonderful of him because we were right in the middle of a fucking wind storm, and he would have been well within his rights to cancle the appointment, or show up hours late. I'm really suprised he didn't cancle, power was down everywhere, and Thruston County was one of the hardest hit. But he showed up at 3pm, right exactly in the middle of the window they said, and got it working within 10 min or so. He even combned the wires so that the second phone line we got rid of now works with our first phone line. So all those outlets we had that connected to nothing after we got rid of the second, now work. No more drilling holes though walls to trail phone cords though to give phone access to random rooms! Yay!
Basicly what happend was...the three guys who were out here when we first swtiched over to High Speed DSL (intead of the regular dialup DSL) lied though their teath when they told me it'd work in any room in the house. Our house's wireing is so old (not to mention built buy idiots) that it can't handle the High Speed DLS everywhere. The HS:DSL is comeing up from Down Town Oly, so by the time it gets here, it's already slower/weaker then if we lived closer. Combine that with the wireing here, and the HS:DSL is basicly getting defused to the point of uselessness. What they need to do (and did) was focus all that DSL down into a single point. Like channeling a large river down into a single pipe into someone's kitchen sink. Which makes perfect sence to me, so I'm doubbly pissed that the last three guys all lied about it for no apprent reason other then to make Qwest look better or something. ::eyeroll::
So we now have Vysaka and the DSL Routers setup in the computer room/guest room/Clay's bedroom, which works for me. Dad orignaly wanted it in their bedroom, but that'd mean that if I had to reboot the routers in the middle of the night, I couldn't because they'd be sleeping in there. So this way I can still fix stuff at 2am or whatever and not wake anyone up...unless we have Guests or something, which I can live with. And when Dad got back from (his five hour trip to) the gym, TechGuy!Mike took him outside to the box and showed him how to switch the DSL to another room in the house. So if he does deside he wants it in his bedroom after all, he can switch it in a matter of minutes.
So...yay. I'm back on-line, and have been since about 4:30...but I was so tired that I just hopped on to test it, and then went to bed. ::lol:: Oh, and TechGuy!Mike even tried to fix Mom's laptop, too! That's why he was here 'til 4:30 instead of leaving after the DSL job at like 3:45. It didn't work, but not for lack of knowledge or trying. He could have just done a cursory glance and said "sorry, can't fix it", it's in now way a part of his job description to even try, he's a phone guy, not a computer tech specialist. But he went though everything. In the end, either mom messed up some of her passwords or something we can't find, or she got a virus that corrupted a driver.
...I'm guessing Virus, honestly. He said she could connect at work, but that was right after it stopped working, so I kinda question it... And honestly? Mom thinks she's doing a virus scan every week, but she dosn't leave her computer on and open, she always closes it when she's done, so it's never on when the auto-scan is set to kick in. And if it comes up while she is on, she turns it off, because she dosen't want it to slow her games down or whatever. So basicly any computer she owns only gets virus or spyware scans about twice a year when I say "fuck it" and do it for her. ::sighs:: She spent all that money to get Norton and Spybot (or whatever it's called, I"m blanking) that automaticly update their deffinitions every day/week, and she goes six months without using them! Talk about a waste of money and unessicary risk. She thinks that just because she only uses Yahoo and Google, or whatever, she's not hitting high risk sites, so she's not exposing herself to any viruses. As long as she avoids MySpace, she'll be safe forever! ::eyeroll::
So...yah, if yer still with me through all that rant (::LOL:: I love you guys), the basic summery is:
- Dale is a fucking Idiot and my parents should fucking know better by fucking now, or I'm not gunna fix his mistakes anymore! They should do what I do, and not let him touch their computers. ::eyeroll::
- Vysaka isn't going on-line for some random reason (despite the DSL Router being hardlined into her), but I didn't notice until after TechGuy!Mike left, but at most I'll probably just have to install the mini-router onto her again and she should work. She'll have both routers plugged into her, which seems kinda silly, but I don't wanna risk installing the main-router program onto her and risk undoing whatever TechGuy!Mike did. The mini-router should work, and with much less risk of fuckup.
- Mom's computer is still down, but we have officaly done everything we can, and she payed for like three years of The Geek Squad and Best Buy in-house help and hasn't once used it, so she needs to take care of that herself, I don't know jack shit about her computer or how it's setup to let her into work from home, so I can't do it.
- Dale is a fucking Idiot, and should never, never, NEVER be listend to. EVER.
In other news,
we survived the storm, so no worries to everyone who might have been consirned I was off-line due to power-outages or dead-by-falling-treebraches or drowned in an overflowing gutter or anything. We did loose power twice, though. Once just for enough seconds to re-set the clocks, the second time for about 10minutes. ::sighs:: But of course it was the second time that hit at the most inconvienet moment.
Usualy, as soon as I hear that a storm is comeing, the first thing I do is take a shower, just in case it's my last chance for a few days if we do loose power, and with it, hot water. Then I do the usual stuff like gather candles, check my flashlights, make one last hot meal and prep foods that won't need stuff outta the fridge or a microwave/stove/whatever. But for some reason, this time I didn't. But my hair is downright ickey and I didn't want any potenchal cute tech guys (happens with the Geek Squad at least, though so far, never with Qwest) to see me like that. So around Noon I get into the shower, and right after I get soaking wet and am debating weitehr or not to shave...out goes the lights. ::B::
Now for those of you've seen my bathroom down here, you know that shower is already dark enough, I need not only the overhead light to be on, but also the heating lamp, just so I can see inside that tiney, far-too-enclosed shower stall. The last thing I need is for no lights what so ever in there.
And of course, I couldn't just get out and wait for power to come back on, oh no, I had to finish my shower. So I wrap up in towl, and try to find and light candles before I simply drip dry! ::sighs:: Needless to say, there was a lot of water for me to mop up later. And I didn't shave my legs. ::eyeroll::
Oddly enough, though, the candles worked great! ::LOL:: Because I was able to put them on the top of the stall (it doesn't go all the way to the cealing, there's about a foot, foot 'n a half, between the top of the stall and the top of the room), the light was exactly where I needed it to see. I think it actualy worked better then the real lights! ::LOL::
And needless to say, the moment I turned the water off, the lights came back on. ::sighs:: When else would we get power back. ::eyeroll::
So that was my fun day. ::sighs:: I also had some cute stories about the babies being here this weekend, but I've been babling for sevral hundred words more then I ment to, so I'll just leave them for another time. And at least I am finaly back on line! ::huggles Tenrai:: And Dale is gone (yay!), and Mom is off doing intervies for a week, so Dad and I have the place to ourselves again. ::streches:: It should be a much calmer week then last week. ::crosses fingers::
God, it's good to be back.
