Why you should read it:
Merlin is a shiny, active fandom that I’ve noticed a few of my favourite Torchwood authors writing in, and I’ve been keeping an eye out for some crossovers. This is one of several that I’ve found, but I liked this one particularly because it’s about Jack, and about Jack having someone who isn’t the Doctor to care about him over the many years of his long life. Mad Maudlin brings in information from Seasons One and Two of Torchwood to show the many places that Merlin slots himself into Jack’s life; Merlin, stuck on the slow path, encounters Jack in a non-linear way, and the ending is wonderfully neat, referencing Jack’s past and Merlin’s future. Oh, and the summary isn't a redundant mistake. You'll see!
You don’t really need to know Merlin to understand this story. If you’re aware of the basics of the Merlin myth, then you won’t have any problems, even if you haven’t been watching the show. What made me happy about this fic was the weaving together of Torchwood and Dr Who canon, the obscure references, and the sense of Jack as an entity who spans a far longer period than just the one that we’ve seen on our screens. There is a genuine sense of friendship and timelessness about the relationship between Jack and Merlin, and I left the story feeling glad that they had each other for infrequent meetings and cryptic conversations.
