Art and Craft: Torchwood in knitting and crochet

Oct 27, 2009 01:03

In light of the fact that our fandom is not restricted to fic, vidding, meta, and other forms of visual art, here are several pieces of craftwork, some of which come with an extra added bonus; two of these recs include a pattern! I’ve put one in here for fans that crochet, and one for fans that knit, and one for fans that like to sock. They’re representative of a little crafty ship afloat on the broad sea of fandom. Each of these items have moved familiar shapes into the medium of soft sculpture, and whilst they may make more sense to the yarny people amongst our readers, I hope that others can see the love and dedication that went into creating each of these works.

Title: Torchwood Coffee Cups
Artist: universeofblue
Rating: Open
Pairing(s)/Character(s): Ianto Jones
Warnings: none
Spoilers: none

Why you should check out this art:

Cute little knitted cups to hold trinkets and pens and suchlike have been around for a while now, but for the true fan you can make yourself a Torchwood version to sit on your desk! This is a very clean, lovely project with clear instructions and a great link to Torchwood. If knitted coffee cups aren’t your thing, then universeofblue has provided a chart for the historical T logo that could easily be incorporated into other projects. I am planning to make one for my desk at work, and for those fans who are members of the website Ravelry, then the pattern is already listed so that you can add it to your queue.

Title: Crochet Vortex Manipulator [see below for links]
Artist: laurab1
Rating: Open
Pairing(s)/Character(s): Jack Harkness
Warnings: none
Spoilers: none

Why you should check out this art:

If you’re into cosplaying Jack, then you have probably at some point desired a vortex manipulator. Even not being into cosplay, I’ve still found a replica model make its way into my collection! laurab1 has gone one step further and created a vortex manipulator from crochet. It’s personal, most of all, and reminiscent of recent art projects where hard, technological items have been taken into a soft-sculpture medium, changing them from their original function and intent. This vortex manipulator won’t get you beyond the stars, but it will warm your wrist and the possibility of customising the contents means that it could become a gift for a friend. It has a con story attached to it, too, for anyone who likes some narrative with their crochet!

The pattern [without pictures] is here

A post showing pictures of the completed Vortex Manipulator is here

And one more, sans pattern, but the concept is so great that I can’t not add it to the list!

Title: Torchwood Socks
Artist: Sapphire2001 at blogspot
Rating: open
Pairing(s)/Character(s): any
Warnings: none
Spoilers:none

Why you should check out this art:

Torchwood socks aren’t just for the Ask ‘Verse crew. The branding of everything with the familiar T logo is a feature of the show, and Sapphire2001 has carried that into knitting, creating a pair of socks with the logo. Torchwood socks are not something I’d put past Torchwood One, or even Torchwood Three, with their window decals and clearly identifiable SUV. This is cool and an expression of fannish love in genuine sock form.
